Although the housing does not process an electrical signal, it determines the physical position of the proximity probe. Its mechanical condition therefore affects the geometry on which the proximity measurement depends.
Looseness, mechanical displacement, deformation, or incorrect mounting can move the probe relative to the target. The monitoring system may then detect a signal change caused by probe movement rather than actual shaft movement.
Not necessarily. The housing can normally remain in service when its mechanical condition, mounting integrity, and compatibility with the replacement probe are satisfactory. It should nevertheless be inspected whenever the probe is serviced.
