Product Overview

The Allen Bradley 1783-MX08S is an eight-port SFP expansion module for the Stratix 8000 modular managed Ethernet switch family. It adds fiber-optic connectivity to a compatible Stratix 8000 base unit without requiring replacement of the main switch assembly.

The module is intended for industrial Ethernet networks where fiber connections are needed between control cabinets, network segments, remote equipment, or areas where copper Ethernet cabling is not suitable. Its eight SFP interfaces allow the network configuration to be expanded according to the required optical connections.

The 1783-MX08S operates as part of the Stratix 8000 switch architecture rather than as an independent Ethernet switch. Network switching, port configuration, and management functions remain associated with the main Stratix 8000 system.

  • Supports 100 FX fiber-optic connections within a Stratix 8000 system.
  • Modular architecture allows additional network interfaces to be added to a compatible base switch.
  • Uses SFP transceivers to support the required optical network connection.
  • Suitable for industrial Ethernet networks with distributed equipment and separated network cabinets.
  • Supports fiber connections for applications requiring longer communication distances or electrical isolation.
  • Integrates with the managed switching functions of the Stratix 8000 platform.
  • Suitable for existing Stratix 8000 installations requiring additional fiber connectivity.

Working Principle

The 1783-MX08S extends the available Ethernet interfaces of a Stratix 8000 base switch. After the module is mechanically connected to the compatible base unit, its internal connection becomes part of the switch architecture.

Each SFP position provides an interface for a compatible optical transceiver. The installed transceiver establishes the physical fiber connection between the Stratix 8000 system and the remote Ethernet device or network segment.

When Ethernet data enters one of the active fiber ports, the Stratix 8000 switching system processes and forwards the traffic according to the configured network settings. The expansion module itself does not perform independent switch management.

The SFP-based architecture also allows the physical fiber interface to be selected according to the network installation. This is useful when different parts of an industrial Ethernet system require fiber connections rather than standard copper ports.

Industrial Applications

Application Use of 1783-MX08S
Factory Ethernet Networks Adds fiber connections to an existing Stratix 8000 switch
Control Cabinet Interconnection Connects separated control cabinets through optical Ethernet links
Distributed Automation Provides fiber connections for remote Ethernet devices
Plant Network Segmentation Extends managed network connectivity between separated network sections
High-EMI Areas Fiber can be used where electrical isolation is required
Long-Distance Ethernet Provides an SFP-based interface for fiber network links
Existing Stratix 8000 Systems Adds additional optical ports without replacing the complete switch assembly

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Verify the base unit: Confirm that the Stratix 8000 base switch is compatible with the 1783-MX08S before installation.
  2. Remove power: Disconnect power from the switch before installing or reconfiguring an expansion module.
  3. Check module position: Install the 1783-MX08S in the appropriate expansion position within the Stratix 8000 assembly.
  4. Prepare the connection: Remove the required side cover and protective elements before connecting the expansion module.
  5. Secure the module: Make sure the mechanical latches are fully engaged after joining the expansion module to the base switch.
  6. Observe expansion restrictions: The 1783-MX08S must be positioned according to the Stratix 8000 expansion-module installation requirements.
  7. Select compatible SFPs: Verify the optical transceiver type before connecting fiber cables to the module.
  8. Inspect SFP interfaces: Check the SFP slots for contamination, damaged connectors, or improperly seated transceivers.
  9. Protect fiber cables: Avoid excessive bending, pulling, or mechanical stress on the fiber cables connected to the SFP ports.
  10. Verify port configuration: Check that each installed SFP port is configured correctly in the Stratix 8000 network configuration.
  11. Check network communication: Verify link status and communication with the connected Ethernet devices after commissioning.
  12. Consider lifecycle status: The 1783-MX08S is a discontinued Stratix 8000 expansion module, so replacement planning should consider the existing switch architecture and required fiber interfaces.
