The Bently Nevada BA21502-06 7200 Series Proximity Probe is a non-contact displacement sensor used in machinery monitoring systems to measure the relative position of a conductive shaft. Unlike a contact sensor, it does not need to touch the rotating surface, allowing shaft movement to be monitored continuously while the machine is running.
In rotating equipment such as compressors, turbines, pumps, and generators, the probe is mounted close to the shaft with a controlled gap between the probe tip and the target surface. Changes in this gap produce corresponding changes in the probe system’s electrical output. The monitoring equipment can use the signal to evaluate shaft position, radial vibration, and other shaft-related operating conditions.
The BA21502-06 belongs to the legacy Bently Nevada 7200 Series proximity probe family. These installations operate as a complete measurement chain comprising the probe, a compatible extension cable, and a Proximitor sensor. Selecting the probe alone is therefore not enough when replacing an existing sensor. The electrical characteristics, cable arrangement, total system length, mounting configuration, and receiving electronics must remain compatible.
For maintenance teams working on older machinery monitoring installations, the complete part number is particularly important. A probe with a similar appearance may have a different sensing configuration, mounting arrangement, or cable connection. Matching the original installation helps avoid changes to the probe gap, signal calibration, and monitoring-channel response.

The BA21502-06 operates through the eddy-current measurement principle used by the Bently Nevada 7200 Series. The probe and its compatible Proximitor electronics form a sensing system that responds to changes in the distance between the probe tip and a conductive target.
When the probe is positioned near a rotating shaft, the sensing field interacts with the target material. Movement of the shaft changes the probe-to-target gap, which changes the electrical response of the transducer system. The Proximitor converts this response into an output that can be interpreted by the connected monitoring equipment.
The measurement chain is:
Conductive Shaft → BA21502-06 Proximity Probe → Extension Cable → Proximitor Sensor → Monitoring System
When the shaft moves radially, the gap changes with the movement, allowing the system to measure relative shaft vibration. When the shaft remains at a particular position, the signal also represents the static gap condition within the system’s operating range.
The probe is only one part of this process. Its extension cable and Proximitor must match the intended system configuration. The probe lead and extension cable together establish the required electrical length between the probe and Proximitor; using an incorrectly matched combination can affect the measurement scale factor and system response.
The BA21502-06 serves as the sensing point in a proximity measurement channel. It detects movement of the machine shaft and passes the resulting electrical response through the associated transducer components to the monitoring equipment.
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| BA21502-06 Proximity Probe | Detects changes in the gap between the probe tip and the conductive shaft |
| Compatible Extension Cable | Connects the probe lead to the Proximitor while maintaining the required system electrical length |
| 7200 Series Proximitor Sensor | Supplies the probe excitation and converts the sensing response into an output signal |
| Monitoring Instrument | Receives and processes the transducer output for shaft-position and vibration measurements |
| Conductive Shaft Target | Provides the surface whose relative position is measured |
| Probe Mounting Arrangement | Maintains the required probe position and mechanical clearance |
The complete measurement channel must be considered when replacing the probe. A mechanically compatible probe may still be unsuitable if its electrical configuration, cable length, or associated Proximitor differs from the existing system.

These references represent related 7200 Series configurations, not automatic drop-in replacements. The probe geometry, mounting thread, cable length, connector, and Proximitor compatibility must match the installed measurement channel.
The probe operates using eddy-current sensing. As the distance between the probe tip and the conductive shaft changes, the transducer system’s electrical response changes accordingly. The connected monitoring equipment uses this output to measure relative shaft position and vibration.
The probe lead, extension cable, and Proximitor form a calibrated measurement system. Their electrical characteristics and total system length affect the output relationship between physical gap and electrical signal. An incorrectly matched combination can cause measurement errors even when the probe can be physically installed.
Not solely on the basis of series membership. Related 7200 Series probes can differ in sensing-tip size, mounting style, case dimensions, armor, connector arrangement, and cable configuration. The complete part number and the installed transducer system must be checked before choosing a replacement.
Check the probe gap, target surface, probe lead, extension-cable connectors, Proximitor supply, and system configuration. An abnormal output can result from a damaged cable, incorrect electrical length, faulty connections, an improper gap, or a problem with the sensing electronics. Testing the complete measurement chain helps isolate the cause.
