The Allen-Bradley 1783-SFP10GSRE is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet short-reach optical transceiver for compatible Stratix industrial Ethernet switches. It uses 10GBASE-SR signaling over multimode fiber, with an 850 nm optical wavelength and a duplex LC interface. Depending on the installed multimode fiber grade and its modal bandwidth, the supported link distance ranges from a few dozen meters to several hundred meters. <Cite refs={[“turn443076search23″,”turn443076search21”]}/>
In a manufacturing plant, this module can connect a local industrial switch to a nearby distribution switch, a machine-cell network, or a server-room Ethernet switch. For example, several PLCs, HMIs, and industrial computers may connect to an access switch, with the aggregated network traffic carried over a 10 Gbps fiber uplink to another part of the facility.
The SR interface is intended for shorter multimode fiber routes rather than the longer singlemode links supported by LR transceivers. The fiber grade matters: the maximum reach is not the same for OM1, OM2, and higher-bandwidth multimode fiber. A route that works with OM4 fiber may exceed the supported distance when the same transceiver is used with older multimode cabling.
The 1783-SFP10GSRE is a physical-layer transceiver. It converts electrical signals at the switch’s SFP+ interface into optical signals and converts incoming optical signals back into electrical data. The switch remains responsible for forwarding Ethernet frames, managing VLANs, and handling other network functions.
Before installing the module, confirm that the Stratix switch supports this transceiver, that the remote end uses a compatible 10GBASE-SR interface, and that the existing fiber plant meets the required distance and bandwidth specifications.

The 1783-SFP10GSRE converts the electrical Ethernet data produced by a switch into optical signals at 850 nm. The optical signals travel through the multimode fiber to a compatible receiving transceiver, which converts them back into electrical data for the remote switch.
A typical network link is arranged as follows:
Local Stratix Switch → 1783-SFP10GSRE → Duplex Multimode Fiber → Compatible 10GBASE-SR Transceiver → Remote Switch
When the local switch sends Ethernet traffic across the link, the transceiver encodes the data into optical signals. The fiber carries the signals to the receiving module, and the remote switch forwards the recovered frames to the intended network ports.
The maximum distance depends on the multimode fiber’s bandwidth characteristics. Older 62.5/125 µm fiber generally supports a shorter 10GBASE-SR link than higher-bandwidth 50/125 µm fiber. The fiber type and installed route should therefore be verified before choosing the transceiver or determining the link budget.
A link can fail even when the fiber distance appears acceptable. Dirty LC connectors, incorrect fiber polarity, damaged patch cables, or an unsupported SFP+ module can prevent the endpoints from communicating. The switch’s port status and available optical diagnostics can help narrow down the fault.
Because this module supports 10 Gbps operation, both the switch port and remote transceiver must support the intended link configuration. A 1 Gbps SFP may use a similar connector but does not provide the same data rate or optical interface.
The 1783-SFP10GSRE serves as a high-speed optical interface between compatible industrial Ethernet switches. It is particularly useful when local machine networks generate more traffic than a conventional 1 Gbps uplink can comfortably accommodate.

The 1783-SFP10GSRE uses 10GBASE-SR signaling over multimode fiber at 850 nm, with reach depending on the fiber grade. The 1783-SFP10GLRE uses 10GBASE-LR signaling over singlemode fiber at 1310 nm and supports a specified reach of up to 10 km. The appropriate choice depends on the installed fiber infrastructure and required link distance.
The specified maximum reach is up to 400 m over qualifying OM4 multimode fiber. The actual usable distance depends on the cable specification, installation quality, and the requirements of the complete optical link.
Yes, if the link distance remains within the specified limit. For OM1 fiber, the listed 10GBASE-SR reach is up to 33 m. Longer routes may require a different fiber installation or a suitable singlemode optical solution.
Check the remote transceiver, fiber polarity, LC connector cleanliness, fiber type, switch-port configuration, and firmware compatibility. If available, inspect optical diagnostic readings to help determine whether the received signal is within the permitted operating range.
