The Emerson VS3201 KJ2004X1-BA1 is a Remote Interface Unit (RIU) used in the DeltaV M-series distributed control system. Its purpose is to connect a remote I/O assembly with the wider DeltaV control architecture, allowing field signals collected by remote I/O cards to reach the control system without placing all I/O hardware beside the main controller.
This arrangement is useful in process plants where instruments and actuators are spread across several equipment areas. For example, a chemical processing facility may place an I/O carrier near a group of field instruments while keeping the main controller and operator stations in a central control room. The RIU establishes the interface between the remote I/O assembly and the control system, reducing the need to concentrate every I/O connection in one cabinet.
The KJ2004X1-BA1 belongs to the original RIU generation used in earlier DeltaV M-series installations. Its compatibility requirements differ from those of the later Remote Interface Unit 2 (RIU2). This distinction matters when maintaining an established system because a newer interface unit may require a different DeltaV software version or additional compatibility provisions.
The RIU operates as part of a larger hardware arrangement rather than as a standalone field controller. Its installation depends on the appropriate power/controller carrier, compatible I/O interface carrier, system power supply, extender connections where required, and the associated I/O cards. The actual I/O capacity and signal types depend on the cards installed in the remote assembly.
For a replacement project, engineers should verify the complete part number, the installed DeltaV version, the carrier configuration, and the existing remote I/O arrangement. Matching the model designation alone is not sufficient if the surrounding hardware or software has changed.

The VS3201 KJ2004X1-BA1 provides the interface between a remote M-series I/O assembly and the DeltaV control system. The I/O cards installed in the remote assembly acquire field signals or generate control outputs, while the RIU provides the communication path required for the remote I/O arrangement.
A typical system follows this structure:
Field Instruments and Actuators → Remote I/O Cards → M-series Carrier and RIU → DeltaV Control System → Operator Workstation
When a field transmitter sends a measurement to a compatible input card, the card converts the signal into data that can be used by the control system. The remote interface arrangement transfers the I/O data to the DeltaV system, where the configured control strategy can process it and present relevant values or alarms to operators.
The reverse path applies to output operations. A control strategy determines the required output value, and the corresponding data is transferred to the remote I/O subsystem. A compatible output card then drives the field device according to its configured signal type and electrical requirements.
The RIU does not replace the controller or independently execute the entire process-control strategy. The controller remains responsible for control calculations, sequencing, and logic. The remote interface extends the reach of the I/O architecture so that field signals can be handled at a location separate from the main controller.
The original KJ2004X1-BA1 must also be distinguished from RIU2 hardware. Emerson’s DeltaV M-series Zone 2 Remote I/O documentation identifies the original RIU as the option required for certain DeltaV versions earlier than v13.3.1, while RIU2 has its own version and hotfix requirements. The exact software compatibility must therefore be checked before changing the interface hardware.
The VS3201 functions at the remote I/O interface layer. It connects the remote carrier assembly to the wider control system, allowing supported I/O cards to exchange process data with the DeltaV controller.

It acts as a Remote Interface Unit for the DeltaV M-series I/O subsystem. Its role is to interface the remote I/O assembly with the wider control system so that supported I/O cards can exchange process data with the DeltaV controller.
A direct replacement should not be assumed. The original RIU and RIU2 have different software compatibility requirements. Before changing hardware, verify the DeltaV version, applicable hotfix requirements, carrier arrangement, and support for the installed I/O cards.
The required components depend on whether the installation uses horizontal or vertical carrier hardware. A documented horizontal arrangement can use the VE4050S2K1C0 I/O carrier and VE3051C0 power/controller carrier, while a compatible vertical arrangement can use the VE4054S1C0 and VE3056. The specified system power supply must also be verified for the selected configuration.
Confirm that the remote I/O assembly is recognized by DeltaV, that the expected I/O data is available, and that communication diagnostics show no unresolved faults. Test representative input and output points according to the site’s commissioning procedures before returning the affected process equipment to normal operation.
