The Schneider Electric HMIGTO5310 is a 10.4-inch operator terminal in the Harmony GTO series, intended for machine control systems that require a larger interface for process visualization and operator interaction. Its 640 × 480 pixel VGA color display provides space for equipment diagrams, alarm lists, operating parameters, and grouped status indicators. Compared with smaller GTO terminals, the larger screen can reduce the need to split related information across multiple pages.
On a production line, the HMIGTO5310 can serve as the main operator station for monitoring machine sequences, checking production data, and adjusting permitted settings. An operator might use one screen to review the overall machine state, another to inspect an alarm, and a third to access maintenance parameters. The arrangement depends on the HMI project rather than being fixed by the terminal itself.
The HMIGTO5310 supports Ethernet, RS-232C, and RS-485 communication. This allows it to connect to compatible PLCs over an industrial network or communicate with equipment using supported serial protocols. For example, a machine controller can exchange process values with the terminal over Ethernet, while a separate serial connection may be used for compatible auxiliary equipment. Actual connectivity depends on the selected driver, protocol, wiring, and project configuration.
The terminal supports Vijeo Designer for HMI application development and has 96 MB of Flash EPROM application memory, together with 512 KB of battery-backed SRAM. USB Type-A and Mini-B interfaces support compatible peripheral and service operations, while the SD/SDHC card interface provides an additional option for supported data-transfer workflows.
When specifying the HMIGTO5310 for a new installation or replacement, engineers should consider more than the screen size. The existing project, controller driver, communication ports, memory requirements, and panel cutout all affect compatibility. Its 10.4-inch display is particularly useful where operators need to see more machine information at once, but the project should be checked for VGA screen compatibility before migration.

The HMIGTO5310 acts as the operator interface between a person and a PLC-controlled machine. Its internal runtime executes the configured HMI application, retrieves data from the connected controller, and displays the information as operating values, alarms, status indicators, and graphical screens.
A typical communication path is:
PLC or Machine Controller → Ethernet / Serial Communication → HMIGTO5310 → Touchscreen → Operator
During operation, the HMI reads the variables configured in its project and presents them on the appropriate screens. If an operator changes a setpoint or selects a command, the terminal sends the corresponding request through the configured communication driver. The PLC processes the request according to its program, interlocks, and operating conditions.
The Ethernet interface supports network communication with compatible controllers using an appropriate protocol. Correct IP addressing, network configuration, and driver selection are necessary for data exchange. The terminal’s Ethernet port does not automatically make every controller or industrial protocol compatible.
COM1 supports RS-232C communication, while COM2 supports RS-485 through an RJ45 connection. These interfaces serve different electrical requirements, so the port and cable must match the connected equipment. Serial parameters and protocol settings must also agree at both ends.
Vijeo Designer defines the screen layout, data objects, alarm handling, and operator actions. The SD card and USB interfaces can be used for supported storage or service workflows, depending on the software configuration. They do not replace the need to maintain a compatible application project.
The HMIGTO5310 handles visualization and operator input; it does not replace the PLC’s control logic. Machine sequencing, safety interlocks, and output control remain the responsibility of the associated control system.
The HMIGTO5310 sits at the operator-interface layer of an industrial control system. Its larger VGA display presents information from the controller, while Ethernet and serial interfaces support communication with compatible automation equipment.

Its 10.4-inch display offers more room for machine diagrams, alarm lists, and grouped operating values than smaller GTO terminals. Whether it can serve as the main station depends on the HMI project, controller communication requirements, and the information operators need to see at one time.
The terminal has an Ethernet interface, an RS-232C COM1 interface, and an RS-485 COM2 interface. These provide different communication options, but simultaneous use must be validated against the configured HMI project, supported drivers, and requirements of the connected equipment.
Review the display resolution, screen layout, project target, controller drivers, and communication settings. A project developed for a smaller display may require adjustments to object placement, fonts, navigation, or screen organization before it can be used effectively on the HMIGTO5310.
The terminal uses battery-backed SRAM for supported data-retention functions. Follow the applicable maintenance procedure for battery-status monitoring and replacement, and confirm which application data is stored in backup memory. Keep a current copy of the HMI project so that the terminal can be restored if service is required.
