The Schneider Electric TM2DMM8DRT is an 8-channel digital mixed I/O expansion module for the Modicon M238 logic controller. It combines four 24 V DC digital inputs and four electromechanical relay outputs, allowing a single module to handle both field signal acquisition and equipment switching.
The input section accepts 24 V DC signals from industrial sensors, limit switches, push buttons, and other discrete devices. It supports both sink and source wiring configurations, making it suitable for different sensor output arrangements commonly found in machine control circuits.
The output section consists of four normally open relay contacts. Each channel can switch compatible AC or DC loads, with a maximum rated current of 2 A per channel. Unlike transistor output modules, relay contacts provide electrical switching through mechanical contacts, making them suitable for applications where different load voltage types are required.
The four inputs share one input common line, while the four relay outputs share a separate output common line. These common connections are not internally connected. This separation allows the input and output circuits to be arranged according to their respective power supply and grounding requirements.
The TM2DMM8DRT uses a removable screw terminal block for field wiring. This makes it possible to connect sensors and relay-controlled equipment directly to the module without requiring a separate HE10 cable assembly.
For a compact machine controlled by a Modicon M238 PLC, the TM2DMM8DRT can handle a small group of sensor signals and corresponding relay-controlled devices within one expansion position. Typical applications include conveyor control, packaging equipment, material handling, and general-purpose machine automation.

The TM2DMM8DRT operates through two separate I/O sections: a digital input circuit and an electromechanical relay output circuit.
The input section receives 24 V DC signals from external field devices. When a connected sensor or switch changes state, the corresponding input circuit detects the voltage condition and transfers the signal status to the Modicon M238 controller.
The module supports both sink and source input wiring. The selected configuration depends on the electrical output characteristics of the connected sensors and the system wiring arrangement.
The output section operates through four normally open relay contacts. When the PLC program activates an output address, the corresponding relay coil is energized, causing its normally open contact to close. Current can then flow through the external load circuit.
When the controller deactivates the output, the relay coil is de-energized and the contact returns to its normally open state, interrupting the load circuit.
For example, in a conveyor system, an input channel may receive a signal from a photoelectric sensor detecting the position of a product. The M238 controller processes the signal and activates a relay output to operate an external contactor or auxiliary control circuit.
A simplified signal path is:
Field Sensors → TM2DMM8DRT Digital Inputs → Modicon M238 Controller → TM2DMM8DRT Relay Outputs → External Equipment
The relay contacts support compatible AC and DC switching applications. However, the actual switching capacity depends on the load type, voltage, current, and required electrical service life.
Inductive loads such as contactor coils and solenoid valves can generate voltage transients when switched off. Appropriate external suppression circuits should be installed to protect the relay contacts from excessive switching stress.
The input and output common connections remain electrically separate. This allows the two circuits to use their designated external connections without assuming an internal common connection between them.
Within the Modicon M238 architecture, the TM2DMM8DRT provides combined digital signal acquisition and relay-based switching.
The M238 controller executes the application program, evaluates input conditions, and determines the required output states. The TM2DMM8DRT provides the electrical interface between the controller and the connected field devices.
Its four-input and four-output configuration is suitable for compact machines that require a limited number of sensor signals and relay-controlled devices.
A typical control arrangement is:
Proximity Sensors / Limit Switches → TM2DMM8DRT Inputs → Modicon M238 Controller → TM2DMM8DRT Relay Outputs → Contactors / Solenoid Valves

The TM2DMM8DRT provides eight I/O points in total, consisting of four 24 V DC digital inputs and four electromechanical relay outputs. It is suitable for applications requiring both signal acquisition and relay switching.
The input section supports both sink and source wiring configurations. This allows the module to interface with different sensor output arrangements, provided the electrical connections follow the applicable input wiring diagram.
Each relay output supports a maximum current of 2 A. The combined current across the output common line must not exceed 7 A. The permitted switching capacity also depends on the load type and operating voltage.
Inductive loads such as contactor coils and solenoid valves can generate voltage transients when the relay contacts open. An appropriate external suppression circuit or protective device should be installed. Capacitive loads should not be connected to the relay outputs.
