Product Overview

The Epro PR6423/012-130 8mm Eddy Current Sensor is a non-contact proximity sensor for measuring the relative movement of conductive machine components. It is commonly used on rotating equipment where the position or displacement of a shaft needs to be observed without placing a mechanical sensing element directly against the moving surface.

The sensor is installed close to the monitored target and detects changes in the electromagnetic interaction between its sensing element and the conductive shaft. This makes it suitable for measurement points where conventional contact-based sensors would introduce mechanical loading or wear.

In rotating machinery, the probe can form part of a shaft vibration, radial displacement, or axial-position measurement channel. The actual measurement function depends on the mechanical location of the probe and the configuration of the associated driver and monitoring equipment.

Probe installation has a direct effect on measurement quality. The mounting position, target surface, probe gap, and mechanical stability should therefore be checked as part of commissioning and routine machinery maintenance.

Working Principle

The PR6423/012-130 uses the interaction between an electromagnetic field and a conductive target to detect relative movement. The probe generates an alternating electromagnetic field around its sensing element. When a conductive shaft is positioned within the sensing range, eddy currents are induced in the target.

Movement of the shaft changes the distance between the target and the probe. This changes the electrical response of the sensing circuit, allowing compatible driver electronics to translate the change into a usable displacement-related signal.

Conductive Machine Target → PR6423/012-130 → Eddy Current Driver → Monitoring Electronics

For a shaft vibration channel, the probe detects small radial changes as the shaft rotates. With a suitable mechanical arrangement, the same sensing principle can be used to observe axial movement or another defined displacement.

The probe itself performs the machine-side sensing. Signal conditioning, measurement scaling, alarm evaluation, and protection functions are handled by the connected electronics and monitoring system.

Role in a Rotating Machinery Monitoring Architecture

The PR6423/012-130 serves as the sensing point installed directly at the monitored machine. It detects changes in the position of a conductive target and passes the sensor response to the associated driver electronics.

Rotating Shaft → PR6423/012-130 → Driver / Signal Conditioning → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection

System Element Function
Rotating Shaft Provides the conductive target for measurement
PR6423/012-130 Detects relative movement between the probe and target
Eddy Current Driver Interfaces with the probe and conditions its signal
Extension Cable Connects the probe to associated electronics where required
Machinery Monitoring System Evaluates displacement or vibration information
Protection System Generates configured alarm or protective actions
Control System Uses available machinery-condition data for supervision

The probe does not independently analyze machine condition or execute protection logic. Those functions depend on the connected driver and monitoring equipment.

Industrial Applications

Application Typical Use
Steam Turbines Shaft vibration and displacement monitoring
Gas Turbines Rotor movement measurement
Centrifugal Compressors Shaft position and vibration supervision
Industrial Pumps Non-contact shaft displacement monitoring

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Confirm that the PR6423/012-130 is compatible with the intended driver and monitoring system.
  2. Select a mechanically stable mounting position close to the monitored conductive target.
  3. Inspect the target surface for conditions that could affect proximity measurement.
  4. Position the probe so that its sensing axis is correctly aligned with the intended target.
  5. Set the probe-to-target gap according to the applicable installation requirements.
  6. Secure the probe against movement caused by machine vibration.
  7. Route the sensor cable so that it is protected from mechanical stress and excessive heat.
  8. Check the probe and driver connections before energizing the measurement channel.
  9. Verify the sensor response with the machine stopped.
  10. Observe the measurement during controlled machine startup.
  11. Inspect probe mounting, cable condition, and mechanical alignment during scheduled maintenance.
  12. After replacing or repositioning the probe, verify the measurement signal and associated alarm or protection functions before returning the machine to service.

Technical FAQs

What type of target should be monitored with the PR6423/012-130?

The sensor works with conductive machine targets and is commonly positioned toward a rotating shaft or similarly suitable machine surface. The target characteristics and mechanical arrangement should be considered when establishing the measurement channel.

How does probe alignment affect the measurement?

The probe must be positioned consistently relative to the intended target. Changes in alignment or unwanted probe movement can alter the measured distance and may appear as a machine displacement signal even when the actual shaft movement has not changed.

What should be checked before commissioning a newly installed PR6423/012-130?

Check the probe mounting, target condition, probe-to-target gap, cable connection, and associated driver. The resulting signal should be verified before the machine is brought to normal operating speed.

Can a faulty probe be identified only from the monitoring-system reading?

Not necessarily. An abnormal reading can also result from the driver, cabling, probe mounting, target condition, or configuration. A complete channel check is preferable before replacing the sensor.
