The Epro PR6423/012-030-CN 8mm Eddy Current Sensor is a non-contact sensor used to detect changes in the position of conductive machine components. It is particularly suited to rotating machinery where direct contact with a moving shaft is undesirable and where continuous observation of shaft movement is required.
The probe can be installed close to a conductive shaft or other rotating target and used as part of a machinery monitoring arrangement. Changes in the distance between the probe and the target alter the electromagnetic response of the sensing element, allowing the associated electronics to determine relative movement.
In practical machinery applications, the sensor is used together with an appropriate driver and monitoring system rather than as an independent measurement instrument. The resulting signal can be used for shaft vibration, radial displacement, axial position, or other mechanical measurements depending on the probe installation and monitoring configuration.
The -CN version should be selected together with the applicable driver, cable arrangement, and monitoring equipment. Mechanical installation is equally important because probe stability and the probe-to-target relationship directly affect measurement quality.

The PR6423/012-030-CN uses an electromagnetic sensing method to determine the relative position of a conductive target. The probe generates an alternating electromagnetic field around its sensing element. When a conductive shaft enters this field, eddy currents are induced in the target.
The strength of this interaction changes with the distance between the probe and the target. As the shaft moves during machine operation, the associated driver detects the resulting electrical change and converts it into a measurement signal.
Conductive Shaft → PR6423/012-030-CN → Eddy Current Driver → Monitoring System
For vibration monitoring, small changes in the shaft-to-probe distance are tracked while the shaft rotates. For position monitoring, the same sensing principle can be applied to observe a defined movement of the machine component. The final measurement depends on how the probe is mechanically positioned and how the driver and monitoring system are configured.
The sensor itself is therefore the measurement pickup at the machine side. Signal conditioning, measurement interpretation, alarm thresholds, and protection actions are handled by the downstream electronics.
The PR6423/012-030-CN is installed at the machine as the sensing point of a proximity measurement channel. It detects relative movement of the conductive target and passes the resulting sensor response to compatible driver electronics.

| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Rotating Shaft | Provides the conductive target being monitored |
| PR6423/012-030-CN | Detects changes in the shaft-to-probe relationship |
| Eddy Current Driver | Provides the sensor interface and conditions the signal |
| Extension Cable | Connects the probe with the associated electronics where required |
| Machinery Monitoring System | Evaluates displacement or vibration information |

-CN designation in PR6423/012-030-CN?The suffix forms part of the complete sensor ordering designation and should be retained when identifying or replacing the probe. Compatibility should be checked against the installed driver, cable arrangement, and existing monitoring channel rather than selecting a probe based only on the basic PR6423 series.
The sensing element generates an electromagnetic field around the probe. Movement of the conductive shaft changes its interaction with this field, and the associated driver converts that change into a usable proximity measurement.
The distance between the sensing head and target directly affects the electromagnetic response of the probe. An incorrect gap can result in an unsuitable measurement range, unstable output, or inaccurate machinery monitoring.
First check the probe mounting, cable connections, driver electronics, and mechanical stability. Unwanted movement of the probe, connection problems, electrical interference, or an issue in the driver can cause a changing signal even when the monitored shaft is not rotating.
