A proximity probe measures the relative distance between the stationary probe tip and a conductive machine target. This allows the system to observe shaft position and movement directly, whereas conventional casing-mounted vibration sensors measure vibration at the machine housing.
It is normally mounted in a fixed position near the monitored shaft or another suitable conductive target. The probe must be positioned with the appropriate measurement gap and aligned so that normal machine movement does not cause physical contact.
The probe normally forms part of a complete transducer system and requires the appropriate associated electronics, such as the compatible extension cable and Proximitor sensor, before the signal is presented to the machinery monitoring equipment.
The probe gap establishes the operating point of the proximity measurement. An incorrect gap can produce an abnormal output signal, reduce usable measurement range, or cause inaccurate interpretation of shaft movement.
