The Emerson SE6101 DeltaV S-series Carrier Blank Cap is a carrier accessory used in DeltaV S-series I/O installations to cover an unused carrier position. It is a passive mechanical component rather than an I/O signal-processing module.
The blank cap is useful when a DeltaV carrier has an available position that is not currently occupied by an active I/O component. Covering the unused position helps maintain an organized carrier assembly and prevents an open slot from being left exposed during system operation or maintenance.
In modular DeltaV installations, spare carrier positions may be intentionally left available for future expansion. The SE6101 can be used in these situations to close the unused position until an appropriate I/O component is installed.
The SE6101 should therefore be considered part of the physical S-series I/O infrastructure. It does not execute control logic, acquire field signals, or generate output commands, but instead supports the mechanical organization of the carrier assembly.

The SE6101 does not process electrical signals. Its function is mechanical: it occupies or covers an unused position on the applicable DeltaV S-series carrier.

When an I/O position is not populated by an active module, the blank cap provides a physical cover for that location. This keeps the carrier assembly complete and avoids leaving an unused position visibly open.
The blank cap does not participate in the controller-to-field signal path. Once an active I/O component is required at that position, the blank cap can be removed and replaced by the appropriate compatible component according to the system configuration.
The SE6101 belongs to the physical infrastructure layer of the DeltaV S-series I/O system rather than the control or signal-processing layer.

The SE6101 is appropriate when a carrier position is intentionally unused and does not currently require an active I/O function. An actual I/O module should be installed only when the corresponding signal or control function is required by the DeltaV system design.
