The Epro PR6423/012-010 8mm Eddy Current Sensor is a non-contact displacement sensor used for monitoring the position and movement of conductive machine components. It is commonly applied to rotating machinery where shaft position, vibration, axial movement, or other mechanical changes need to be detected without physical contact between the probe and the target.
The sensor is typically installed with its sensing head facing a conductive rotating target such as a turbine shaft, compressor shaft, pump shaft, or other precision-machined surface. Changes in the distance between the probe and the target affect the electromagnetic field around the sensing element, allowing the associated electronics to determine changes in target position.
In machinery protection systems, the probe is normally installed as part of a complete measurement chain rather than operating as a standalone monitoring instrument. Its output is processed by compatible driver or signal-conditioning electronics before being delivered to a machinery monitoring or protection system.
Proper probe installation is particularly important for rotating equipment. Probe orientation, target material, mounting stability, and the operating gap between the sensor and shaft all affect measurement quality.

The PR6423/012-010 operates through an eddy current measurement principle. When the probe is positioned near a conductive target, its sensing coil generates an electromagnetic field. The presence and position of the conductive target influence this field.
As the rotating shaft moves closer to or farther from the probe, the electrical characteristics of the sensing circuit change. The associated driver electronics convert these changes into a usable measurement signal representing the relative position between the probe and the target.
Rotating Shaft → PR6423/012-010 → Eddy Current Driver → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection
For shaft vibration measurement, the probe observes the changing radial position of the shaft during rotation. For axial-position monitoring, an appropriately positioned probe can detect movement along the shaft axis. The actual measurement function depends on the mechanical installation and the monitoring system configuration.
The sensor therefore forms the front end of the measurement chain. Signal conditioning, scaling, alarm limits, and protection decisions are handled by the associated electronics and machinery monitoring system.
The PR6423/012-010 acts as the sensing element between the rotating machine and the electronic monitoring equipment. It converts changes in the electromagnetic interaction with the conductive target into a signal that can be processed by compatible driver electronics.
Rotating Shaft / Conductive Target → PR6423/012-010 → Driver / Signal Conditioning → Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Rotating Shaft | Provides the conductive measurement target |
| PR6423/012-010 | Detects changes in the target-to-probe relationship |
| Eddy Current Driver | Supplies the sensor and conditions the measurement signal |
| Machinery Monitoring System | Processes and evaluates the measured condition |
| Protection System | Generates configured alarms or protective actions |
| Control System | Uses monitoring information for equipment operation and supervision |
The probe does not independently determine machine health or generate the final protection decision. Those functions depend on the connected driver and monitoring equipment.

The probe should be mounted so that its sensing axis faces the intended conductive target and remains mechanically stable during operation. The probe-to-target gap must be established according to the requirements of the associated driver and monitoring arrangement.
An unstable signal can result from probe movement, incorrect gap, shaft surface irregularities, cable problems, unsuitable target conditions, or issues with the associated driver electronics. Checking the mechanical installation before replacing the sensor can help isolate the cause.
The probe normally works with compatible eddy current driver or signal-conditioning electronics. The driver provides the required sensor interface and converts the probe response into a signal that the monitoring system can process.
Verify the mechanical position, probe-to-target gap, cable connection, driver operation, and resulting measurement signal. The machine should then be checked at controlled operating conditions to confirm that the monitoring system receives a stable and correctly scaled signal.
