The Schneider TM3XTRA1 is a remote transmitter module in the Modicon TM3 expansion I/O range. It is used with a TM3XREC1 remote receiver module to extend the I/O arrangement of compatible Modicon M221, M241, M251, and M262 controllers when the expansion modules need to be installed away from the main controller.
In a machine with sensors and actuators distributed across separate sections, placing every I/O module beside the PLC may require long field cables running back to the control cabinet. The TM3XTRA1 provides the transmitter end of a remote expansion connection, allowing a compatible TM3 I/O arrangement to be located closer to the field devices while communicating with the controller through the transmitter-receiver link.
For example, a packaging machine may have its main controller in one cabinet and a group of additional I/O modules near a conveyor or handling station. The TM3XTRA1 can form part of the remote expansion arrangement, with the TM3XREC1 installed at the other end of the connection. The local I/O modules collect signals from the nearby equipment, reducing the need to route every field signal directly to the main cabinet.
The TM3XTRA1 uses an RJ45 connection for the remote link and RS-485 communication. Green LED indicators show power and link status, giving technicians a convenient first check when commissioning the connection or investigating a communication fault.
When replacing the module, check the transmitter and receiver pairing, controller model, expansion layout, cable arrangement, and grounding connections before returning the system to operation.

The TM3XTRA1 forms one end of the communication link used to extend a Modicon TM3 I/O arrangement. It works with the TM3XREC1 receiver rather than functioning as a standalone I/O acquisition module.
Modicon Controller → TM3XREC1 Receiver → Remote Expansion Link → TM3XTRA1 Transmitter → TM3 I/O Modules
In a typical installation, the transmitter and receiver are connected through the specified expansion cable. The receiver connects to the controller-side arrangement, while the transmitter provides the remote end of the link for the associated TM3 expansion modules.
Consider a machine with a main control cabinet and a separate conveyor station. Instead of routing every sensor and actuator cable from the conveyor back to the main cabinet, compatible TM3 I/O modules can be installed at the remote station. The TM3XTRA1 and TM3XREC1 establish the expansion connection between the remote I/O arrangement and the controller-side system.
The module’s power and link LEDs provide a quick visual indication during commissioning. If remote I/O stops responding, technicians can check the link indication, cable connections, functional grounding, receiver connection, and the configuration of the expansion system before replacing hardware.
The TM3XTRA1 is part of a transmitter-receiver arrangement. Its function depends on the corresponding receiver, the controller-side TM3 connection, the expansion cable, and the I/O modules installed in the remote configuration.
Modicon M221 / M241 / M251 / M262 → TM3XREC1 → Expansion Cable → TM3XTRA1 → Remote TM3 I/O Modules
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| TM3XTRA1 | Remote transmitter module at the expansion end |
| TM3XREC1 | Remote receiver module connecting the remote expansion arrangement to the controller side |
| Expansion Cable | Carries the communication connection between transmitter and receiver |
| Modicon M221 | Compatible controller family for TM3 expansion |
| Modicon M241 | Compatible controller family for TM3 expansion |
| Modicon M251 | Compatible controller family for TM3 expansion |
| Modicon M262 | Compatible controller family for TM3 expansion |
| TM3 Digital I/O Modules | Acquire discrete input signals and control digital outputs |
| TM3 Analog I/O Modules | Handle compatible analog process signals |
| Functional Ground Connection | Provides the specified functional grounding connection |
The final arrangement depends on the controller, receiver, transmitter, cable, and supported I/O configuration used in the machine.
| Application | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Packaging Machinery | Locating additional I/O modules near conveyor and packaging stations |
| Conveyor Systems | Connecting remote sensor and actuator I/O to the main controller |
| Assembly Machines | Extending I/O to separate machine sections without routing every field cable to one cabinet |
| Material Handling | Connecting remote I/O around transfer points and handling stations |
| Automated Production Lines | Distributing compatible TM3 expansion modules across machine sections |
| Machine Tooling | Locating I/O closer to auxiliary mechanisms and equipment |
| Palletizing Systems | Extending controller I/O to remote handling or conveyor sections |
| Industrial Equipment Skids | Connecting remote I/O assemblies within a modular equipment layout |
| Multi-Station Machines | Linking a remote I/O section to the controller-side expansion arrangement |
| Control Panel Systems | Organizing I/O around the physical layout of the equipment |
The TM3XTRA1 should be treated as part of the complete remote expansion link. Replacing the transmitter alone will not resolve a fault caused by a damaged cable, an unpowered receiver, or an incompatible system configuration.

The TM3XTRA1 is the remote transmitter module, while the TM3XREC1 is the corresponding receiver. They work together to establish the remote TM3 I/O expansion connection; they perform different roles and are not interchangeable.
The TM3XTRA1 is listed for use with the Modicon M221, M241, M251, and M262 controller families. The complete transmitter-receiver and I/O configuration must also be compatible with the selected controller.
Check the power and link-status LEDs, the RJ45 expansion cable, the TM3XREC1 connection, functional grounding, and the installed module arrangement. These checks help distinguish a link problem from a controller-side or remote I/O configuration issue.
The RJ45 connection is used for the remote expansion link between the transmitter and receiver. It is not simply an Ethernet network port for connecting the module directly to a standard office network switch.
