The Schneider TM3DM24R is a 24-channel mixed discrete I/O module for the Modicon TM3 platform, combining 16 discrete inputs and 8 relay outputs in one expansion module. This arrangement is useful on machines where the controller needs to collect a relatively large number of field status signals while also switching several discrete loads.
In a machine-control cabinet, the 16 inputs can be used for proximity sensors, limit switches, push buttons, motor auxiliary contacts, cylinder-position feedback, and other 24 V DC field signals. The 8 relay outputs can then operate contactors, solenoid valves, indicator devices, interposing relays, or other suitable loads. Keeping both functions in one module can simplify the I/O arrangement when a machine has a mixed combination of sensors and actuators.
For example, a conveyor or packaging machine may require several product-detection sensors and position switches while also controlling solenoid valves and motor contactors. The TM3DM24R can handle these input and output points within the same TM3 expansion position, reducing the need to split the functions across separate input and output modules.
The module uses removable screw terminal blocks and is intended for compatible Modicon controllers including the M221, M241, M251, and M262 families. During replacement or retrofit work, the existing controller configuration, input assignments, relay load requirements, and field wiring should be checked together rather than selecting the module only by its total I/O count.

The TM3DM24R handles two different parts of the machine I/O circuit: field signal acquisition through its 16 inputs and discrete load switching through its 8 relay outputs.
Sensors / Switches → 16 Digital Inputs → Modicon Controller → 8 Relay Outputs → Actuators
A sensor or switch connected to one of the 16 input channels changes the corresponding input state when the field condition changes. The Modicon controller reads these states and evaluates them through the application program.
The controller can then command one of the eight relay outputs according to the machine sequence. For example, a proximity sensor may confirm that a workpiece has reached a defined position, after which the PLC activates a relay output connected to a solenoid valve. The same module can therefore collect the position feedback and provide the discrete command required for the next machine action.
The relay outputs are particularly useful when the controlled circuit needs a relay contact rather than a transistor output. The actual load and switching frequency still need to remain within the specified output limits.
The TM3DM24R combines field input acquisition and relay-based output switching within the same Modicon TM3 expansion architecture.
Field Sensors / Switches → TM3DM24R Inputs → Modicon Controller → TM3DM24R Relay Outputs → Machine Actuators
| System ElementFunction | |
|---|---|
| TM3DM24R Inputs | Collect 16 discrete field signals |
| TM3DM24R Relay Outputs | Switch 8 discrete output circuits |
| Proximity / Limit Sensor | Provides machine position or presence feedback |
| Push Button / Switch | Provides operator or equipment status input |
| Modicon Controller | Processes input states and executes logic |
| Relay Output Circuit | Provides switching contacts for field loads |
| Solenoid Valve | Converts a controller command into mechanical action |
| Contactor / Interposing Relay | Controls suitable higher-level machine circuits |
The module is useful where the I/O ratio is weighted toward input signals but several relay-controlled outputs are also required. The exact assignment of the 24 channels depends on the machine’s electrical design.

The TM3DM24R combines 16 discrete inputs and 8 relay outputs, giving the module 24 I/O channels in total. This makes it suitable for machines that require more input points than relay-controlled outputs.
The relay outputs can be used with suitable discrete loads such as contactor coils, solenoid valves, indicator devices, and interposing relays. Each output has a rated current limit, and the shared common-line loading also needs to be considered when several outputs operate together.
Both models provide the same basic 16-input / 8-relay-output mixed I/O arrangement. The main connection difference is the terminal type: TM3DM24R uses removable screw terminal blocks, while TM3DM24RG uses removable spring terminal blocks.
First check the PLC output command and the corresponding output status indication. Then inspect the relay wiring, common connection, load voltage, actuator coil, and terminal connections. If the controller commands the output correctly but the external circuit does not operate, the investigation should continue through the relay contact and field load circuit.
