The Schneider STBACO0220 is a Modicon STB Standard Analog Output Module used to send continuous current commands from a distributed I/O system to field equipment. It has two analog output channels for applications using standard 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA signals.
In a process control cabinet, the module can send a current reference to a proportional valve, actuator, or compatible drive. For example, a PLC can calculate the required valve position from a pressure or flow loop, then send the corresponding command through the STBACO0220. The module converts the controller output data into the analog signal expected by the field device.
The STBACO0220 is part of the modular Modicon STB distributed I/O platform. It operates as one I/O position within an STB island, with the island network interface exchanging data between the distributed I/O and the PLC or PAC.
This architecture is useful when control devices are spread around a machine or process area. An STB island can be installed close to the field equipment, allowing analog output wiring to terminate locally rather than routing every signal to the main controller cabinet.
For replacement work, the installed STB island configuration should be checked together with the network interface, mounting base, terminal arrangement, power distribution, field-device signal requirements, and controller configuration.

The STBACO0220 acts as the analog output interface between the controller and a field device.
PLC / PAC → Network Interface → STB Island Bus → STBACO0220 → Field Device
The PLC application determines the required output according to the control strategy. That value is transferred to the STB island, where the STBACO0220 converts the controller data into a corresponding current signal.
For a valve positioner using 4–20 mA, the output current represents the requested operating position within the configured range. A similar arrangement can be used when a compatible drive requires an analog reference.
The module handles the physical analog conversion, while the PLC remains responsible for the control calculation, sequencing, interlocks, alarms, and process logic.
This separation is useful during commissioning and troubleshooting. The controller command can be compared with the actual output current to determine whether an issue is related to the application program, STB communication, module configuration, wiring, or the receiving field device.
The STBACO0220 occupies the analog output position between the STB island and external equipment requiring a continuous current command.

| PLC / PAC | Generates application-specific analog commands |
| Control Valve | Receives a proportional current signal |
| Variable Speed Drive | Can receive an analog reference where supported |
| Field Actuator | Converts the analog command into physical movement |
The final arrangement depends on the selected STB modules, network interface, power distribution scheme, field equipment, and controller configuration.
| ApplicationTypical Use | |
|---|---|
| Water Treatment | Sending proportional commands to process valves and actuators |
| Pump Systems | Providing analog references to compatible drive equipment |
| HVAC Systems | Controlling proportional valves and dampers |
| Process Skids | Regulating field devices through continuous current signals |
| Packaging Machinery | Sending variable commands to machine actuators |

The STBACO0220 can be connected to field devices that accept compatible 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA control signals. Typical examples include proportional valve positioners, actuators, and compatible variable speed drives.
The STBACO0220 is a Standard Analog Output Module. It sends current signals from the controller-side STB system toward field equipment rather than acquiring measurement signals from transmitters.
The PLC command should first be verified against the intended process value. The actual current at the output circuit can then be measured and compared with the expected signal. If the measured value is correct but the field device does not respond, attention should move to the field wiring, device configuration, or receiving equipment.
It can be used to provide an analog reference to a compatible variable speed drive when the drive accepts the corresponding current signal. The drive itself remains responsible for converting the reference into motor control, so its input configuration and scaling must match the STBACO0220 output configuration.
