Product Overview

The Epro PR6423/13R-030+CON021 8mm Eddy Current Sensor+Eddy Current Signal Converter combines an eddy current probe with a signal-conditioning unit for non-contact monitoring of rotating machinery. The PR6423/13R-030 detects changes in the distance between the sensor and a conductive machine target, while the CON021 processes the probe signal for connection to a compatible monitoring system.

This combination is suited to applications where shaft movement, relative position, or vibration-related displacement needs to be measured without mechanical contact. Typical equipment includes steam turbines, gas turbines, compressors, pumps, generators, gearboxes, and other critical rotating machinery.

During operation, the probe is positioned toward the monitored conductive surface. Changes in the probe-to-target distance alter the eddy-current response, and the CON021 converts and conditions this response for the downstream machinery monitoring or protection system.

For commissioning and troubleshooting, the probe and converter should be treated as a complete measurement channel. Probe installation, target condition, cabling, converter connections, and monitoring-channel configuration can all influence the final measurement.

Working Principle

The PR6423/13R-030 generates an electromagnetic field near the monitored conductive target. Eddy currents are induced in the target, and the electrical response changes as the distance between the probe and target changes.

When installed near a rotating shaft, radial or axial movement changes the probe gap. The resulting change in the eddy-current response is detected by the sensor and passed to the CON021 signal converter.

The measurement path can be represented as:

Rotating Shaft → PR6423/13R-030 Probe → CON021 Signal Converter → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection Logic

The CON021 conditions the probe response so the connected monitoring equipment can evaluate the measured displacement. Continuous changes in the signal can be used to observe shaft position or dynamic movement associated with rotating-machine operation.

Because the probe operates without physical contact, the measurement depends heavily on correct probe positioning, stable mounting, appropriate target conditions, and proper electrical connections.

Role in a Rotating Machinery Condition Monitoring Architecture

The PR6423/13R-030+CON021 combination forms the front-end sensing channel between the rotating machine and the machinery monitoring system.

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Verify the complete combination before installation, including the PR6423/13R-030 probe and CON021 signal converter.
  2. Confirm the measurement point and ensure that the probe faces the intended conductive target on the rotating machine.
  3. Position the probe correctly according to the applicable installation and monitoring-system requirements.
  4. Inspect the target surface for deposits, corrosion, mechanical damage, or other conditions that could affect the eddy-current response.
  5. Secure the probe mounting to prevent unwanted movement of the stationary sensor during machine operation.
  6. Inspect the probe cable and connections for looseness, insulation damage, excessive bending, or mechanical stress.
  7. Verify the CON021 connection and confirm that the signal-conditioning path is correctly configured for the associated probe.
  8. Check signal wiring and channel assignment before connecting the converter output to the monitoring system.
  9. Observe the measurement during commissioning and compare the signal behavior with the known operating condition of the machine.
  10. Monitor signal stability during operation and investigate sudden changes, intermittent signals, or unexpected measurement drift.
  11. Recheck probe position after machinery maintenance whenever work has been performed around the shaft, bearings, mounting bracket, or associated cabling.
  12. Maintain measurement records including sensor replacement, converter replacement, installation checks, and relevant machine-condition observations.

Technical FAQs

What is the function of the PR6423/13R-030+CON021 combination?

The PR6423/13R-030 detects relative movement between the probe and a conductive target, while the CON021 conditions the sensor signal for use by a compatible machinery monitoring or protection system.

What type of machinery can use this sensor and converter combination?

It can be applied to critical rotating equipment such as turbines, compressors, pumps, generators, gearboxes, and turboexpanders where non-contact shaft movement or displacement monitoring is required.

Why should the probe and CON021 be checked as one measurement chain?

A measurement problem can originate from the probe, mounting, cable, converter, or monitoring input. Checking the complete signal path helps distinguish an actual mechanical condition from an electrical or installation problem.

What should be checked when the measurement signal suddenly changes?

First inspect the probe position, mounting stability, target surface, probe cabling, CON021 connections, and monitoring-channel configuration. If the signal path is normal, the shaft, bearing system, and actual machine operating condition should then be investigated.
