Product Overview

The Epro PR6423/13R-010+CON021 8mm Eddy Current Sensor+Eddy Current Signal Converter is a non-contact measurement combination for rotating machinery monitoring. The PR6423/13R-010 sensor detects changes in the distance between the probe and a conductive machine target, while the CON021 signal converter conditions the probe response for connection to a machinery monitoring or protection system.

This type of measurement is commonly used where shaft movement must be monitored without placing a mechanical sensor directly against the rotating component. Turbines, compressors, pumps, generators, gearboxes, and other high-speed machinery can use eddy current measurement to observe shaft position or dynamic movement.

The probe is normally positioned toward a suitable conductive target on the rotating assembly. Changes in the probe-to-target relationship alter the eddy-current response, which is then processed by the associated converter. The resulting signal can be evaluated by the connected monitoring system for machinery condition and protection purposes.

For maintenance work, the probe, signal converter, associated cabling, mounting arrangement, and monitoring input should be checked as a complete measurement chain. A fault in any part of this chain can appear as an abnormal displacement or vibration signal.

Working Principle

The PR6423/13R-010 uses an eddy-current sensing principle to detect changes in the distance between the probe and a conductive target. The probe generates an electromagnetic field near the target surface, and the resulting eddy-current response changes as the target moves.

For a rotating shaft, small radial or axial movements change the probe gap. These changes are reflected in the electrical response of the sensing circuit and are passed to the CON021 signal converter.

The measurement path can be represented as:

Rotating Shaft → PR6423/13R-010 Probe → CON021 Signal Converter → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection Logic

The converter conditions the probe signal so that the monitoring system can evaluate the measured machine movement. Depending on the monitoring channel, the resulting information can be used for shaft position, displacement, or vibration-related supervision.

Because the sensing method does not require physical contact with the rotating target, probe alignment, mounting rigidity, target condition, and probe gap become important installation factors.

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Verify the complete sensor combination before installation, including the PR6423/13R-010 probe and CON021 signal converter.
  2. Confirm the probe mounting location and make sure the sensor is correctly positioned toward the intended conductive target.
  3. Set the probe gap correctly according to the applicable installation requirements before commissioning the measurement channel.
  4. Inspect the target surface for deposits, mechanical damage, excessive wear, or other conditions that could influence the eddy-current response.
  5. Secure the probe mounting to prevent movement of the stationary sensor during machine operation.
  6. Inspect all cable connections for looseness, damaged insulation, excessive bending, or other physical problems.
  7. Verify the probe and converter combination before connecting the output to the machinery monitoring system.
  8. Check signal wiring and polarity to ensure that the converter output is correctly connected to the designated monitoring input.
  9. Observe the measurement during commissioning and compare the signal behavior with the known operating condition of the machine.
  10. Monitor for signal fluctuations during normal operation and investigate sudden changes or intermittent readings.
  11. Recheck probe position after machine maintenance whenever work has been performed around the shaft, bearing housing, probe bracket, or associated cabling.
  12. Keep installation and maintenance records including probe replacement, converter replacement, and relevant measurement observations for future troubleshooting.

Technical FAQs

What type of measurement is the PR6423/13R-010 used for?

The PR6423/13R-010 is an eddy current sensor for non-contact measurement of movement between the probe and a conductive target. In rotating machinery, this principle can be used for shaft displacement, position, and vibration-related monitoring.

What does the CON021 signal converter do?

The CON021 processes the electrical response from the eddy current probe and conditions the measurement signal for use by the connected machinery monitoring or protection equipment.

What can cause an abnormal signal from an otherwise correctly operating probe?

An abnormal signal can result from incorrect probe positioning, unsuitable probe gap, target-surface contamination or damage, unstable mounting, cable problems, converter issues, or an actual change in shaft movement. The complete measurement chain should therefore be checked before replacing individual components.

Can this sensor combination be used for turbine and compressor monitoring?

Yes. Eddy current sensing is suitable for non-contact monitoring of rotating components, making this type of probe-and-converter combination applicable to turbine, compressor, pump, generator, and other rotating-machinery monitoring systems when the associated monitoring architecture is compatible.
