The Ingersoll Rand 47642701001 54509427 Air/Oil Separator is a replacement separation component used in compatible rotary screw compressor systems. It separates lubricating oil from the compressed air stream after the air/oil mixture leaves the compression stage, helping return recovered oil to the lubrication circuit while allowing the compressed air to continue toward downstream treatment and distribution equipment.
In an oil-injected screw compressor, the compression process produces a mixture containing compressed air and circulating lubricant. Before the air can move through the remaining stages of the system, most of the entrained oil must be removed. The air/oil separator forms part of this separation stage and is typically installed within the compressor’s separator vessel or designated separator assembly.
A separator in poor condition can contribute to increased oil carryover, abnormal pressure loss, or changes in compressor operating performance. For maintenance work, the separator should therefore be considered together with the separator tank, scavenge line, minimum pressure valve, lubricant condition, and the complete air-end lubrication circuit.
The 54509427 separator should be matched to the existing compressor configuration before replacement. Part-number compatibility, installation arrangement, sealing surfaces, and the condition of related compressor components should all be checked during service.

After compression, the air/oil mixture enters the separator stage. Larger quantities of lubricant are initially separated within the compressor’s air/oil separation arrangement, while the separator element removes remaining oil from the compressed air stream.
Air End → Air/Oil Mixture → Separator Vessel → 54509427 Air/Oil Separator → Compressed Air Outlet
The separated lubricant is returned toward the compressor lubrication circuit through the applicable oil recovery path. The compressed air then continues through downstream components such as the minimum pressure valve, aftercooler, air treatment equipment, or plant distribution system.
The separator itself does not compress air or circulate lubricant independently. Its function is concentrated on the separation stage. A restricted or deteriorated separator can affect the pressure differential across the separator assembly and may contribute to increased oil consumption or unwanted oil carryover.
The 54509427 occupies the separation stage between the compressor air end and the downstream compressed-air system. It works with the separator vessel and oil recovery circuit to divide the compressed-air flow from the circulating lubricant.
Air Intake → Air End → Air/Oil Mixture → Separator Vessel → 54509427 Air/Oil Separator → Minimum Pressure Valve → Compressed Air System
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Air Intake Filter | Removes contaminants from incoming compressor air |
| Air End | Compresses air and mixes it with circulating lubricant |
| Separator Vessel | Provides the primary air/oil separation environment |
| 54509427 | Separates remaining oil from the compressed air stream |
| Oil Recovery Circuit | Returns recovered lubricant to the compressor system |
| Minimum Pressure Valve | Maintains required downstream separator pressure |
| Aftercooler | Reduces compressed-air temperature |
| Air Treatment Equipment | Removes moisture or contaminants as required |
| Compressed Air System | Delivers air to downstream plant equipment |
This arrangement allows the compressor to maintain separate air and lubricant flow paths after the compression stage.

Increased oil carryover, abnormal separator pressure loss, higher lubricant consumption, or changes in normal compressor performance can indicate that the separator and related air/oil separation circuit should be inspected.
The oil recovery path works with the separator assembly to return recovered lubricant to the compressor system. A blocked or restricted scavenge line can affect oil recovery and should be checked during separator maintenance.
Yes. Excessive oil passing beyond the compressor separation stage can increase the load on downstream equipment and contaminate components intended to handle compressed air after separation.
After reassembly and controlled startup, check the separator assembly for leaks, verify normal compressor pressure behavior, inspect the oil recovery path, and monitor the compressed-air system for abnormal oil carryover.
