Product Overview

The Epro PR6423/01C-010 8mm Eddy Current Sensor is a non-contact displacement sensor for monitoring the relative movement of conductive targets in rotating machinery. It belongs to the PR6423 Series and can be used where shaft position, radial movement, axial displacement, or vibration-related motion needs to be observed continuously.

The sensor is installed close to a conductive shaft or other suitable target. Changes in the distance between the sensing head and the target alter the eddy current response, allowing the associated measurement electronics to detect mechanical movement without requiring physical contact with the rotating component.

This type of sensing is commonly used on turbines, compressors, generators, motors, pumps, expanders, and other rotating equipment. It is particularly useful where direct observation of shaft movement is required as part of a machinery monitoring or protection channel.

The sensor should be evaluated as part of the complete measurement system rather than as an isolated component. Mounting stability, probe-to-target positioning, target material and geometry, cable condition, and compatible signal-conditioning equipment all affect the resulting measurement.

Working Principle

The PR6423/01C-010 uses an eddy current sensing field to detect changes in the distance between the sensor head and a conductive target. When the rotating shaft moves relative to the probe, the electrical response of the sensing circuit changes.

The associated driver or signal-conditioning electronics interprets this response and converts it into a measurement signal for the downstream monitoring system. Depending on the installation, the resulting signal can be used to observe shaft position, displacement, or vibration-related movement.

Rotating Shaft / Conductive Target → PR6423/01C-010 → Eddy Current Driver → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection

The sensor itself does not determine whether a machine should alarm or trip. Those functions are handled by the downstream monitoring and protection equipment. Sensor mounting is therefore critical because movement of the probe can be interpreted as movement of the monitored target.

Role in an Epro Eddy Current Monitoring Architecture

The PR6423/01C-010 occupies the field sensing stage of an eddy current measurement channel. It detects relative movement at the monitored target and transfers the sensing response to compatible signal-conditioning electronics.

Rotating Machinery → PR6423/01C-010 → Signal Conditioning → Monitoring Input → Alarm / Protection

System Element Function
Rotating Shaft Provides the conductive target being monitored
PR6423/01C-010 Detects changes in target-to-sensor distance
Eddy Current Driver Interfaces with and conditions the sensor response
Monitoring Input Receives the conditioned measurement signal
Machinery Monitoring System Evaluates shaft position or movement information
Alarm / Protection System Generates configured alarm or protective responses

The complete sensor-to-monitoring path should be considered when diagnosing an abnormal measurement.

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Confirm the complete PR6423/01C-010 model designation before installation.
  2. Verify compatibility with the intended Epro driver, signal-conditioning equipment, and monitoring input.
  3. Isolate the monitored machinery and follow applicable safety procedures before working near rotating equipment.
  4. Inspect the sensor body and sensing head for damage, contamination, or deformation.
  5. Ensure the probe mounting arrangement is mechanically secure and cannot move during machine operation.
  6. Position the sensing head correctly relative to the conductive shaft or target surface.
  7. Establish the required probe-to-target gap according to the applicable monitoring-system requirements.
  8. Route the sensor cable to minimize excessive bending, mechanical stress, and avoidable electrical interference.
  9. Check connectors and terminations for secure attachment and signs of contamination or damage.
  10. Verify the sensor response through the associated driver and monitoring input during commissioning.
  11. If the measurement becomes unstable, check probe position, target condition, cable integrity, driver operation, and monitoring input.
  12. After replacement, verify the complete measurement channel and confirm normal monitoring operation before returning the machinery to service.

Technical FAQs

What should be matched when replacing a PR6423/01C-010 sensor?

The complete model designation should be compared with the existing installation, together with the associated driver, cable arrangement, mounting method, and monitoring input. Selecting a replacement solely by sensor diameter is not sufficient.

How can a mounting problem appear in the monitoring signal?

Because the measurement is based on the relative position between the sensor and target, movement of the probe itself can produce a signal change. Loose mounting, mechanical vibration, or a displaced bracket should therefore be considered when an otherwise stable measurement changes unexpectedly.

Why does the target material matter for an eddy current sensor?

The sensing response depends on the interaction between the electromagnetic field and the conductive target. Changes in target material, geometry, or surface characteristics can affect the measurement response and should be considered when modifying an existing installation.

What is the difference between the sensor and the monitoring system?

The PR6423/01C-010 detects relative target movement at the machine. The downstream driver and monitoring system handle signal conditioning, measurement evaluation, alarms, and protection functions. The sensor is therefore one stage of the overall machinery monitoring chain.
