The PR6423/015-111 uses an eddy current sensing principle to measure the relative distance between the sensor and a conductive target. The sensor generates an electromagnetic field near the target surface, and changes in the target position alter the electrical characteristics of the sensing system.
As the rotating shaft moves relative to the sensor, the resulting change is passed to the associated signal-conditioning electronics. The conditioned signal can then be interpreted by a machinery monitoring system as shaft displacement, position, or vibration-related information.

The sensing system depends on interaction with a conductive target. Target material, geometry, surface condition, and the installed sensor arrangement can therefore affect the measurement response and should be considered when setting up or replacing a sensor.
The sensor-to-target relationship is critical. Probe gap, alignment, mounting stability, and target geometry should all be checked because unwanted movement of the sensor can appear as actual shaft displacement.
The sensor should be used with the compatible signal-conditioning equipment required by the complete PR6423 measurement arrangement. The sensor alone does not provide the final monitoring-system interface.
