The GE UR 6PH Multilin UR Series Digital I/O Module is an interface module used with GE Multilin Universal Relay (UR) systems to handle discrete field signals. It connects external digital devices to the relay platform, allowing status inputs and control outputs to be incorporated into protection, monitoring, and automation functions.
In a UR installation, digital I/O modules are typically used for signals such as breaker status, trip circuit supervision, interlocking, alarms, auxiliary contacts, and control commands. The 6PH module expands the relay’s field interface capability while allowing these signals to be incorporated into the configured protection and control logic.
For replacement applications, the complete module designation should be matched with the installed UR relay configuration. The terminal arrangement, I/O assignment, and relay firmware configuration should also be checked before commissioning.

The UR 6PH receives discrete signals from external field devices and makes those signals available to the UR relay’s configured logic. Output channels operate in the opposite direction, allowing relay logic to issue discrete commands to external control equipment.
A simplified signal path is:
Field Contacts / Control Devices → UR 6PH Digital I/O Module → UR Relay Logic → Protection / Control Functions
For an input signal, the module detects the electrical state of the connected field circuit and transfers the corresponding digital status to the relay. The UR relay can then use that status in protection logic, programmable logic, alarms, measurements, or control sequences.
For an output command, the relay logic determines the required state and sends the corresponding discrete output through the module to the connected field circuit.
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Circuit Breaker / Switchgear | Performs switching and provides auxiliary status signals |
| Field Contacts | Provide discrete status and alarm information |
| GE UR 6PH | Interfaces digital field signals with the UR relay |
| Multilin UR Relay | Executes protection, control, monitoring, and programmable logic |
| Protection CTs / VTs | Provide electrical measurements for protection functions |
| Trip / Close Circuits | Receive discrete control commands |
| SCADA / Station Network | Provides higher-level monitoring and control |
The 6PH module sits at the field-interface level of the UR architecture. Its signals can become inputs to the relay’s programmable logic or outputs from that logic to external control circuits.

The UR 6PH is a digital I/O module intended for discrete field signals. Typical applications include breaker auxiliary contacts, alarms, interlocks, equipment status signals, and discrete control commands.
Digital inputs from the module are made available to the UR relay’s configured logic. Relay logic can use these states for protection, control, alarms, and automation functions, while configured digital outputs can transmit commands to external circuits.
The complete module designation, relay hardware configuration, terminal assignment, field wiring, I/O configuration, and applicable firmware or configuration requirements should be checked. The replacement should match the existing UR system configuration before it is commissioned.
Verify the module is recognized by the relay, then test the relevant digital inputs and outputs from the field circuit. Confirm breaker status, alarms, interlocks, trip/close commands, and other application-specific logic respond as expected before placing the protection system back into service.
