Product Overview

The Epro PR6423/010-100-CN is an 8 mm eddy current sensor for non-contact measurement of shaft movement in rotating machinery. It is used at measurement points where the relative position between a stationary sensor and a rotating conductive target needs to be monitored continuously.

The sensor is installed near the monitored shaft, typically around bearing assemblies or other defined measurement locations. As the shaft moves radially or axially, the distance between the target surface and sensor head changes, producing a corresponding variation in the eddy current sensing response.

For turbine, compressor, pump, generator, and motor applications, this type of sensor can be used to monitor shaft vibration, relative displacement, and positional changes. Because the sensing method does not require physical contact with the rotating component, the sensor can remain installed while the machine operates.

The PR6423/010-100-CN functions as the field sensing element and is normally connected to compatible signal-conditioning or monitoring electronics. The resulting measurement can be incorporated into machinery condition monitoring, alarm, and protection systems.

Working Principle

The PR6423/010-100-CN generates an electromagnetic sensing field around the probe tip. When the conductive shaft or target enters this field, eddy currents are induced in the target. The electrical response changes as the distance between the sensor and target changes.

During machine operation, radial shaft vibration or axial movement produces variations in this gap. The associated electronics process the sensor response and convert it into a measurement signal representing the mechanical movement.

Rotating Shaft → PR6423/010-100-CN Sensor → Signal Conditioning Electronics → Machinery Monitoring System → Alarm / Protection

The measurement channel can be used for:

  • Shaft radial displacement
  • Relative shaft vibration
  • Shaft position monitoring
  • Mechanical movement detection
  • Continuous rotating machinery monitoring

The stability of the sensor mounting is important because movement of the sensor itself can affect the measured gap and therefore the resulting signal.

Role in a Rotating Machinery Control Architecture

The sensor provides the first measurement point in the machinery monitoring chain. It detects physical changes at the shaft and passes the corresponding sensing information to downstream electronics for processing and evaluation.

Machine Shaft → PR6423/010-100-CN → Signal Conditioning → Monitoring Module → DCS / Protection System

System Element Function
Rotating Shaft Provides the conductive measurement target
PR6423/010-100-CN Detects changes in the shaft-to-sensor gap
Signal Conditioning Electronics Processes the sensor response
Monitoring Module Evaluates displacement or vibration information
Protection System Generates configured alarms or protective actions
DCS / Control System Receives selected machinery condition information

The separation between the field sensor and monitoring electronics allows the sensor to be mounted directly at the machinery measurement location while signal processing remains in the appropriate instrumentation or control cabinet.

Industrial Applications

Application Typical Use
Steam Turbines Shaft vibration and relative displacement monitoring
Gas Turbines Rotor movement measurement
Compressors Shaft condition monitoring
Pumps Radial shaft displacement measurement
Generators Rotor position and vibration monitoring
Industrial Motors Shaft movement detection
Gearboxes Rotating shaft condition monitoring
Critical Rotating Equipment Continuous machinery monitoring and protection

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Mount the sensor securely at the designated measurement point.
  2. Position the sensing head toward the appropriate conductive target surface.
  3. Verify the sensor-to-target gap during installation and commissioning.
  4. Ensure the mounting structure is mechanically stable.
  5. Prevent unwanted movement of the sensor during machine operation.
  6. Route the sensor cable away from excessive vibration and mechanical hazards.
  7. Avoid excessive bending or mechanical stress at the cable connection.
  8. Verify the connection to the associated signal-conditioning electronics.
  9. Check the complete measurement channel before machine startup.
  10. Monitor signal stability during initial operation.
  11. Compare measured shaft movement with normal equipment operating conditions.
  12. Inspect the sensor, mounting, and cable during scheduled maintenance.

If the measurement changes unexpectedly, check both the mechanical installation and the downstream electronics before replacing the sensor.

Technical FAQs

What is the main purpose of the PR6423/010-100-CN?

It is used to detect changes in the distance between the sensor head and a conductive rotating target, allowing relative shaft movement to be monitored.

Can this sensor be used to monitor shaft vibration?

Yes. Radial movement of the rotating shaft changes the sensor-to-target gap, allowing the associated measurement system to obtain vibration-related displacement information.

Where should the sensor normally be mounted?

It is normally mounted at a defined measurement position close to the rotating shaft, such as near a bearing or another location specified for shaft displacement monitoring.

Why is sensor mounting stability important?

The measurement is based on changes in the gap between the sensor and target. If the sensor mounting itself moves or vibrates, that movement can influence the measurement and produce an inaccurate representation of shaft movement.
