The Emerson SP2404 Unidrive SP Series AC Drive is a universal variable-speed drive for industrial motor systems that require adjustable speed, controlled torque response and configurable operation. As a Size 2 model in the Unidrive SP family, it is used in applications where motor behavior must be coordinated with machine sequencing, process demand and stopping requirements.
The SP2404 supports a three-phase 380–480 V AC supply. Product literature lists a maximum continuous output current of 20.5 A, a maximum peak current of 50.7 A, and a typical motor rating of 11 kW (15 hp). Actual permissible current depends on operating conditions such as switching frequency, ambient temperature and the selected control configuration.
In a machine-control system, the drive processes run commands and speed references, then adjusts its output according to configured motor parameters. Its onboard control interfaces and optional expansion modules support integration with compatible automation equipment. Correct commissioning requires matching the drive settings to the motor, checking the intended overload profile and confirming that the selected stopping method suits the mechanical load.

The SP2404 converts incoming three-phase AC power into a controlled output for the connected motor. Its power electronics regulate motor operation according to the configured control mode, motor data and active operating references. The drive’s response depends on the application settings and the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the connected system.
The product literature lists a maximum continuous output current of 20.5 A and a maximum peak current of 50.7 A. These figures describe different operating limits: the peak rating is not a continuous operating value. Continuous current capability must be evaluated against switching frequency, ambient temperature and the applicable drive configuration.
During operation, the drive responds to run commands and speed references, applying configured acceleration and deceleration behavior. Applications with frequent stopping or high mechanical inertia may require additional assessment of the braking arrangement and the energy returned to the drive during deceleration.
If the drive trips, maintenance personnel should record the fault indication and operating conditions before changing parameters. Checking supply quality, motor wiring, reference signals, load behavior and configuration can help identify the cause and avoid unnecessary changes to protection settings.
The SP2404 serves as the motor-control layer between the electrical supply, machine controller and driven equipment. It regulates motor output according to its configured control strategy and provides supported status and diagnostic information for supervisory control and troubleshooting.

Peak current applies to short-duration operating demands, while continuous current is limited by the drive’s thermal and operating conditions. Drive selection should use the applicable continuous-current rating and account for switching frequency, ambient temperature and the machine’s overload profile.
Check the recorded fault, acceleration ramp, motor current, load inertia and supply conditions. Confirm that the drive’s continuous and peak-current limits suit the actual cycle, then assess whether the mechanical load or braking arrangement contributes to the trips.
Verify the drive address, baud rate, parity, stop bits and network wiring. Confirm that the controller uses the correct command and data mapping, and test communication status independently before changing motor-control parameters.
Check the motor rating, supply voltage, control mode, installed option modules, wiring arrangement and parameter configuration. Confirm that the replacement supports the required current, feedback and communication functions, then validate machine interlocks and stopping behavior during commissioning.
