The Emerson SP2401 Unidrive SP Series AC Drive is a variable-speed drive for industrial motor-control systems that require adjustable speed, configurable motor response and integration with automated equipment. As a Size 2 model in the Unidrive SP range, it offers a higher current capacity than the SP1400 series models, making it suitable for applications with greater motor-current requirements.
For a three-phase 380–480 V AC supply, the SP2401 is rated at 13.0 A continuous output current in Heavy Duty operation and 15.3 A in Normal Duty operation. The selected duty must match the motor’s rated current, overload demand and operating cycle. These current ratings are more useful for drive selection than nominal motor power alone, particularly where the driven load experiences frequent changes in torque or starting demand.
The SP2401 can be configured for compatible induction motor and servo-control applications. In a machine control panel, it processes operating commands and speed references, applies programmed acceleration and deceleration behavior, and reports operating status or fault conditions. Optional Unidrive SP modules can extend its communication, feedback or application functions where supported by the chosen configuration.

The SP2401 converts incoming three-phase AC power into a controlled electrical output for the connected motor. Its power electronics regulate motor operation according to the selected control mode, configured motor data and incoming speed or operating commands. The drive’s response depends on the programmed settings and the characteristics of the connected load.
The model’s continuous output-current rating is 13.0 A in Heavy Duty operation and 15.3 A in Normal Duty operation. Heavy Duty is relevant where the application has greater overload demands, while Normal Duty permits the higher continuous-current rating under its specified conditions. The motor and load must be evaluated against the applicable rating and any required derating conditions.
Speed references and ramp parameters determine how the motor responds to command changes. For machinery with substantial inertia, rapid stopping or repeated deceleration, engineers should evaluate the stopping method and braking requirements. An unsuitable deceleration setting can result in excessive stopping time or drive trips.
The drive also monitors operating conditions and reports faults when it detects a condition that interrupts normal operation. Troubleshooting should start with the fault indication and the operating circumstances, then examine supply quality, motor wiring, load conditions, control references and configuration settings.
The SP2401 functions as the motor-control layer between the electrical supply, machine controller and driven equipment. It regulates motor output according to the configured control strategy and provides operating information that can be used for sequencing, supervision and fault response.

| Model | Product Type | Relationship | Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emerson SP1405 | Unidrive SP AC Drive | Smaller-frame model with lower current capacity | Compare its 7.6 A Heavy Duty and 8.8 A Normal Duty ratings with the required motor current |
| Emerson SP1406 | Unidrive SP AC Drive | Smaller-frame model with lower current capacity | Check whether its 9.5 A Heavy Duty and 11 A Normal Duty ratings are sufficient |
| Emerson SP2402 | Unidrive SP AC Drive | Higher-rated model in the same frame group | Compare current capacity and overload requirements before selecting |
| Emerson SP2403 | Unidrive SP AC Drive | Higher-rated model in the same frame group | Evaluate the load requirements and installation conditions before considering an upgrade |
Check the installation environment against the drive’s specified operating conditions and apply any required derating for temperature, altitude or switching frequency. Also verify that panel ventilation and clearances are adequate for the actual heat load.
Review the trip code, motor current, load resistance, starting sequence and configured acceleration ramp. Verify the motor data and selected duty rating, and check whether the driven equipment is mechanically obstructed before changing protection settings.
Confirm that the controller supports the drive’s Modbus RTU interface, then configure the communication address and serial parameters consistently at both ends. Test status reading, command handling and communication-loss behavior before relying on the link for machine operation.
Check the motor current requirement, supply configuration, panel mounting arrangement, wiring, parameter mapping and control interfaces. A higher-current model should not be treated as a direct drop-in replacement until the installation and application settings have been reviewed.
