The Emerson SP1404 Unidrive SP Series AC Drive is a variable-speed AC drive for industrial motor-control systems that require adjustable speed and configurable operating behavior. As part of the Unidrive SP family, it supports applications involving induction motors and compatible servo motor configurations, with control functions selected according to the motor, feedback arrangement and machine requirements.
The SP1404 is associated with the 380–480 V three-phase model range. Its commonly listed output ratings are 5.8 A for Heavy Duty operation and 6.9 A for Normal Duty operation. These ratings help distinguish applications with different overload requirements and load characteristics. The drive should be selected according to the motor’s rated current and the operating demands of the driven equipment.
In a machine control panel, the SP1404 receives operating commands and speed references through its configured control connections. Its parameters determine how it responds to speed changes, acceleration requests, stopping commands and operating limits. The Unidrive SP platform also supports optional expansion modules for applications that need additional communication, feedback or control interfaces.

The SP1404 converts its three-phase AC input into a controlled electrical output for the connected motor. Its power electronics regulate motor operation according to the selected control mode, programmed motor data and incoming operating commands. The resulting output allows the motor to follow a configured speed reference within the drive’s operating limits.
The SP1404’s commonly listed continuous output-current ratings are 5.8 A in Heavy Duty operation and 6.9 A in Normal Duty operation. The selected duty must match the application requirements, including motor current, overload demand and the load’s behavior during starting and running. The motor’s power rating alone is not sufficient to determine suitability.
Acceleration and deceleration parameters determine how the drive responds to changes in speed demand. Where the machine has significant inertia or requires frequent stopping, the deceleration strategy and braking arrangement need particular attention. Incorrect settings can lead to excessive stopping time, overvoltage trips or unnecessary mechanical stress.
The drive also monitors internal operating conditions and reports faults when it detects conditions that prevent normal operation. Effective diagnosis involves checking the fault indication, supply conditions, motor wiring, control references and configured parameters before changing the drive setup.
The SP1404 functions as the motor-control layer between the incoming electrical supply, automation controller and driven machine. It executes the configured control strategy while providing status information that can be used by the wider system for sequencing, monitoring and fault response.

When a motor decelerates, its mechanical energy can be returned to the drive’s DC bus. If the energy cannot be handled by the configured braking arrangement, the drive may trip on an overvoltage condition. Review stopping frequency, deceleration time and braking requirements for the actual load.
Verify the selected control mode, motor nameplate parameters, any configured autotune results and feedback settings where applicable. Also check that the motor connections and phase assignment are correct before adjusting torque-related parameters.
Compare the external reference command with the reference value interpreted by the drive, then review speed limits, enable conditions and active operating states. If the internal reference is correct but motor behavior remains abnormal, investigate motor data, output wiring, load conditions and fault indications.
Check the module’s compatibility with the Unidrive SP platform, the intended protocol or feedback device, the required firmware and the available installation space. After installation, confirm parameter recognition, signal mapping and communication or feedback operation before returning the machine to service.
