The Emerson DST1401 Digitax ST Servo Drive is a compact AC servo drive for controlling servo motor speed, torque and position in industrial motion systems. It belongs to the Digitax ST family and is intended for applications where a motor must follow commanded movements accurately, such as automated assembly equipment, packaging machinery, indexing tables and machine-tool axes.
The DST1401 operates from a three-phase 380–480 V AC supply and is rated at 1.5 A output current, with a peak current rating of 4.5 A. Its Frame Size 1 construction suits installations where the drive must be integrated into a machine control cabinet alongside power distribution, motion control and motor feedback equipment.
In a typical machine axis, a motion controller sends commands to the drive, which regulates the electrical power supplied to the servo motor. Feedback from the motor encoder allows the control system to monitor movement and correct deviations from the commanded motion. The resulting performance depends on the motor, feedback device, drive configuration and mechanical load as a complete system.
The DST1401 is part of the Digitax ST servo drive range, which includes different frame sizes and electrical ratings. When selecting a replacement, engineers should verify the supply voltage, continuous and peak current requirements, motor compatibility and feedback interface rather than choosing a drive solely by its family name.

The DST1401 converts incoming three-phase AC power into controlled electrical output for a compatible servo motor. The drive regulates motor current according to the selected operating mode and the motion command supplied by the machine controller.
During a positioning cycle, the controller commands the axis to move to a target position. The drive supplies the motor with the current required to accelerate, maintain motion and decelerate. The motor’s feedback device returns movement information, allowing the control loop to compare the actual response with the commanded movement and make corrections.
In packaging machinery, for example, a servo axis may need to advance material by a defined distance before a cutting or sealing operation begins. The drive must respond to the motion command while accounting for acceleration, deceleration and the mechanical load. Incorrect motor data, feedback settings or current limits can affect the axis response even when the drive itself is functioning normally.
The DST1401 does not independently determine the entire machine sequence. Position targets, interlocks and coordination between multiple axes are handled by the configured motion controller or other control equipment. The drive executes the motor-control function within the limits of its electrical ratings and installed configuration.
The DST1401 forms the motor power-control stage of a servo axis. It receives motion commands, regulates motor output and uses compatible feedback information to control the motor response.

The DST1401 is specified for a three-phase 380–480 V AC supply. The actual installation must also meet the drive’s current, protection, earthing and supply-quality requirements.
Check the motor’s rated current, peak current, voltage requirements, feedback interface and intended duty cycle. The drive’s continuous and peak ratings must be suitable for the motor and the mechanical load.
Inspect the encoder cable, connector seating, feedback device compatibility and drive configuration. Also verify that the selected feedback interface and motor parameters correspond to the installed motor.
A braking resistor may be needed when the motor returns regenerative energy to the drive during deceleration or when the application has frequent stopping cycles. The requirement depends on the drive configuration, mechanical inertia and braking duty.
