The Schneider TSXDSY16S5 Modicon Premium Discrete Output Module provides 16 solid-state AC output channels for controlling electrical loads from a compatible Modicon Premium PLC. Its triac-based output circuits switch AC loads in response to commands from the PLC application, making the module suitable for machine-control circuits that use AC-operated devices.
The module operates with nominal output voltages from 48 to 240 V AC, with a specified operating range of 41 to 264 V AC. Each channel supports up to 1 A, subject to a maximum total module current of 12 A. These limits make load distribution an important part of panel design, particularly when several outputs operate simultaneously.
Unlike relay output modules, the TSXDSY16S5 uses solid-state triac switching. This affects the types of loads it can control and the way OFF-state behavior should be evaluated. It is intended for AC circuits rather than DC loads, and connected devices must be suitable for triac outputs. Its screw-terminal connection arrangement supports individual field wiring for applications such as indicator circuits, AC control devices and compatible machine actuators.

The TSXDSY16S5 receives output commands from the Modicon Premium PLC through the system backplane. When the PLC application activates an output channel, the corresponding triac switches the AC circuit according to the module’s output design. When the command is removed, the triac stops conducting according to the characteristics of the AC waveform and the connected load.
Because triac outputs are intended for AC switching, the module should not be treated as a general-purpose DC output module. The load’s voltage, current, power factor and switching behavior must be suitable for triac operation. Some low-current or electronic loads may not behave as expected because of leakage current or the characteristics of the output device.
Each channel supports up to 1 A, while the combined current across the module must not exceed 12 A. The application should account for simultaneous load operation rather than sizing each channel independently. The specified activation and deactivation response times are less than 10 ms, but the overall machine response also depends on the PLC scan, application logic and connected load.
If a load fails to switch, troubleshooting should distinguish between the PLC command, module output circuit, field wiring and load itself. The output fuse, supply voltage and load compatibility should be checked before replacing the module.
The TSXDSY16S5 functions as the AC output interface between a Modicon Premium PLC and external electrical loads. The PLC executes the control program and issues channel commands, while the module switches compatible AC circuits. Input modules and field sensors provide the feedback used by the control program to determine when outputs should operate.

The module uses triac-based output switching, which relies on the behavior of AC waveforms for switching off. DC loads do not provide the same natural current-zero crossing, so they should not be connected unless the product specifications explicitly permit the application.
The module’s total current limit may be exceeded even when no individual channel draws more than 1 A. Calculate the combined current of all loads that can operate simultaneously and adjust the load distribution or output arrangement as necessary.
Triac outputs can exhibit OFF-state leakage current, which may be enough to affect some low-current electronic loads. Check the load’s input characteristics and the module’s output specifications, then use an appropriate interface arrangement if needed.
The BMXDAO1605 belongs to the Modicon X80 platform, so the change requires more than matching the output count. Verify controller and rack compatibility, output voltage, channel current, wiring and connectors, addressing, and any PLC configuration changes required for the migration.
