The Schneider Electric TM5SPS3 Modicon TM5 Power Distribution Module is used in compatible Modicon TM5 automation systems to distribute power to the fieldbus interface electronics, TM5 expansion bus, and I/O power segment. It is particularly relevant to modular control assemblies where the communication interface, expansion modules, and field devices have separate power requirements.
The module handles two distinct power paths. The main supply circuit powers the fieldbus interface electronics and generates the TM5 bus supply for compatible expansion modules. The separate 24 V DC I/O power segment supplies the relevant I/O circuits and connected field devices. Keeping these functions distinct makes it easier to calculate current demand and identify which part of the system is affected when a supply fault occurs.
For example, a machine-control panel may use TM5 expansion modules to acquire sensor signals and operate field devices across a production station. The TM5SPS3 provides the associated power distribution, while the controller executes the application logic and the fieldbus interface handles network communication. Its suitability depends on the controller and interface configuration, the required bus current, and the electrical demand of the connected equipment.
When selecting or replacing this module, the complete TM5 assembly should be considered, including the controller family, fieldbus interface, bus base, expansion modules, external 24 V DC supplies, and protective devices.

The TM5SPS3 receives 24 V DC from an external power supply and distributes it through two separate circuits.
Main 24 V DC Supply → Fieldbus Interface Electronics and TM5 Power Bus
Separate 24 V DC Supply → I/O Power Segment → Compatible I/O Circuits and Field Devices
The main circuit supplies the fieldbus interface electronics and generates the TM5 bus supply used by expansion modules. Its available output current must be calculated against the total consumption of the connected modules. At temperatures from 55 to 60°C, the TM5 bus current rating is reduced from 750 mA to 500 mA.
The second circuit supplies the I/O power segment, which can distribute up to 10 A. Its actual load depends on the connected modules and field devices, as well as the capacity of the external supply, wiring, terminals, and protective devices.
These two ratings are independent. An adequate total power-supply rating does not guarantee that the TM5 bus or I/O power segment is within its individual limit. Both circuits must be checked during commissioning and whenever the system is expanded.
The TM5SPS3 occupies the power-distribution position in a compatible TM5 assembly. It supplies the electrical paths needed by the fieldbus interface and expansion modules, while the controller and communication interface perform the control and network functions.
Controller → Fieldbus Interface → TM5 Assembly → I/O Modules → Field Devices
| System Component | Function |
|---|---|
| TM5SPS3 | Distributes power to the TM5 bus and I/O power segment |
| Modicon Controller | Executes control logic and manages the automation application |
| Fieldbus Interface | Handles communication between the controller system and the relevant network |
| TM5 Bus Base | Provides the required mechanical and electrical module connections |
| TM5 I/O Modules | Acquire input signals or control output devices |
| Common Distribution Module (CDM) | Provides field-side distribution connections in compatible configurations |
| External 24 V DC Supply | Powers the designated main or I/O supply circuit |
| Field Sensors and Actuators | Generate process signals or respond to control outputs |
The actual configuration depends on the controller, communication interface, selected I/O modules, and system power requirements. When adding modules, the TM5 bus load and I/O power segment load must be recalculated separately.
| Application | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Machine Automation | Distributing power within modular I/O assemblies used for machine monitoring and control |
| Packaging Machinery | Supplying compatible expansion modules and field-side devices such as sensors and actuator interfaces |
| Material Handling | Supporting TM5 power distribution in conveyor and transfer equipment control systems |
| Motion-Control Systems | Providing power distribution in compatible Modicon controller and TM5 configurations |
| Process Equipment | Supplying the I/O power segment for connected instrumentation and field devices |
| Automated Assembly Lines | Supporting modular I/O arrangements used to monitor equipment status and control production operations |
| Distributed I/O Stations | Separating bus power requirements from field-side I/O power demand |
| Industrial Machine Upgrades | Extending compatible TM5 assemblies after checking bus loading and I/O power capacity |
The module’s suitability for an application depends on controller compatibility, the selected fieldbus interface, the total power demand, and the operating environment. It does not replace the controller or perform signal processing.
During maintenance, investigate repeated fuse operation instead of simply replacing the fuse. A short circuit, excessive current, incorrect wiring, or a faulty connected device may be responsible. Recalculate both power circuits whenever the system configuration changes.

The TM5 power bus supplies the required bus power to compatible expansion modules. The separate I/O power segment supplies the relevant I/O circuits and connected field devices. The bus has its own current limit, while the I/O power segment can distribute up to 10 A. The two circuits must be checked independently when calculating system power requirements.
The TM5 power bus current rating is 750 mA from −10 to 55°C and decreases to 500 mA from 55 to 60°C. If the assembly operates at higher ambient temperatures, the total expansion-module bus consumption must remain within the reduced limit.
No. Reverse-polarity protection is provided on the TM5 power bus, but not on the I/O power segment. The polarity of the I/O supply must therefore be checked carefully during installation. External protection must also be selected according to the applicable wiring requirements.
Check the separate I/O power supply, polarity, external fuse, terminal connections, and total field-side load. If the TM5 bus and fieldbus interface remain operational, the problem may be limited to the I/O power path or connected equipment. Isolate the supply before inspecting the wiring, and identify the cause of any blown fuse before restoring power.
