Product Overview

The Schneider TM3DQ16R is a 16-channel discrete output module for the Modicon TM3 platform, using relay outputs to interface a Modicon controller with external devices. It is suited to machine control panels where several independent ON/OFF loads need to be switched from the PLC program.

In a packaging machine, for example, the module can control solenoid valves, contactors, signal lamps, buzzers, and interposing relays according to the machine sequence. In a conveyor system, individual outputs can be assigned to motor-control circuits, pneumatic actuators, stack lights, or auxiliary equipment. The 16-channel arrangement is useful when the controller needs a relatively high number of discrete output points in one expansion module.

Because the outputs are relay-based, the module can be used for different types of suitable external circuits rather than being limited to a single transistor output switching arrangement. The actual voltage, current, load type, switching frequency, and common-circuit requirements should be checked before connecting field loads.

The TM3DQ16R is intended for compatible Modicon controllers and fits into the modular TM3 expansion architecture. For retrofit work, the existing output address assignment and field wiring should be documented before replacing the module so each controlled device remains mapped to the intended PLC output.

Working Principle

The TM3DQ16R receives output commands from the Modicon controller and uses its relay contacts to switch the corresponding external circuits.

Modicon Controller → TM3DQ16R → Relay Contact → Field Load

When the PLC program commands an output channel ON, the corresponding relay changes state and closes its normally open contact. This allows the connected control circuit to energize a suitable load such as a solenoid valve, contactor coil, indicator, or interposing relay.

When the command is removed, the relay returns to its normal state and interrupts the associated circuit.

The module therefore acts as the switching interface between the controller’s output logic and the machine’s external devices. For applications with several actuators, each relay channel can be assigned to a specific function in the PLC program, such as valve extension, motor enable, alarm lamp, conveyor control, or auxiliary equipment.

Role in a Modicon TM3 Control Architecture

The TM3DQ16R occupies the output side of a Modicon TM3 control system, translating PLC output commands into switched field circuits.

PLC Program → Modicon Controller → TM3DQ16R → Relay Outputs → Contactors / Valves / Indicators / Other Loads

System ElementFunction
Modicon Controller Executes the machine control program
TM3DQ16R Provides 16 relay output channels
Relay Contact Switches the external control circuit
Solenoid Valve Converts an electrical command into actuator movement
Contactor Controls suitable motor or power circuits
Interposing Relay Interfaces the PLC output with another circuit
Indicator Lamp Displays machine or equipment status
Alarm / Buzzer Provides discrete operator notification

The output assignment depends on the application program and electrical design. Each field load should be matched to the appropriate output channel and relay operating limits.

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Confirm that the TM3DQ16R is supported by the installed Modicon controller and TM3 configuration.
  2. Verify that the machine application requires relay outputs rather than another output technology.
  3. Check the voltage and current requirements of every connected field load before wiring.
  4. Confirm that each output remains within the specified relay and common-line current limits.
  5. Identify the PLC output address assigned to every field device before replacing an existing module.
  6. Use the removable screw terminal connections according to the electrical design of the machine.
  7. Keep output wiring appropriately separated from high-power motor and drive cables where practical.
  8. Label each output channel according to the connected actuator, contactor, valve, lamp, or auxiliary device.
  9. During commissioning, activate each output individually and verify the corresponding field device response.
  10. Check relay operation if an output command is present but the connected load does not energize.
  11. Inspect the load circuit, fuse or protection device, terminal connection, and external device before assuming that the I/O module has failed.
  12. During maintenance, check relay-controlled circuits for loose connections, abnormal heating, contact wear, or loads that exceed the intended operating conditions.

Technical FAQs

What type of loads can the TM3DQ16R control?

The relay outputs can be used for suitable discrete loads and control circuits, including solenoid valves, contactor coils, indicator devices, buzzers, and interposing relays. The actual load must remain within the applicable relay voltage and current limits.

Why would a relay output module be selected instead of a transistor output module?

Relay outputs can be useful when the application requires relay contacts or needs to switch suitable DC or AC control circuits. Transistor outputs are generally used for applications with different switching requirements, so the load type and switching characteristics should be considered during selection.

How should the 16 outputs be assigned in a machine program?

Each physical output should be mapped to a clearly defined machine function in the PLC program and electrical drawings. Typical assignments include solenoid valves, contactor coils, indicator lamps, alarms, and auxiliary equipment. Consistent channel documentation makes commissioning and troubleshooting easier.

What should be checked if one TM3DQ16R output does not activate its load?

First verify that the PLC program is commanding the correct output channel. Then check the output status, terminal connection, relay contact circuit, external power supply, protection devices, and field load. If the command and module status are correct but the load remains inactive, the problem may be in the external circuit rather than the controller program.
