The Schneider TM3DI8G is an 8-channel discrete input module for the Modicon TM3 I/O platform. It is used when a Modicon controller needs additional digital input points for field devices such as proximity sensors, limit switches, push buttons, selector switches, and auxiliary contacts.
In a machine control cabinet, the module can collect position feedback from cylinders, motor run signals, safety-related status contacts, or operator commands and make those states available to the controller. For example, a packaging machine may use several sensors to confirm product position and actuator travel; the TM3DI8G can bring those ON/OFF signals into the PLC program without requiring the controller itself to handle every field connection.
The module is particularly useful in modular control panels where I/O requirements change from one machine section to another. It can be combined with other TM3 input, output, or mixed I/O modules so the controller configuration matches the actual field devices installed on the equipment.
For replacement work, the existing controller model, TM3 configuration, field wiring, and input assignment should be checked before installing the TM3DI8G.

The TM3DI8G receives binary signals from field devices and makes the corresponding input states available to the connected Modicon controller.
Field Device → TM3DI8G → Modicon Controller → PLC Logic
For example, when a proximity sensor detects a moving component, its discrete signal reaches one of the module’s input channels. The controller reads that channel state and can use it to advance a sequence, stop an actuator, trigger an interlock, or update an equipment status.
The module therefore sits at the field-signal side of the control system. Its practical function is not to perform the control decision itself, but to collect the discrete information that the controller needs for its application logic.
In a machine with several sensing points, the input channels can be assigned to functions such as cylinder retracted, cylinder extended, motor running, guard closed, material detected, or fault contact active. The actual meaning of each channel is determined by the machine program and wiring arrangement.
The TM3DI8G acts as a digital field-input interface between sensors or switches and the Modicon controller.
Field Sensors / Switches → TM3DI8G → Modicon Controller → Control Program → Output Devices

The TM3DI8G is used to collect discrete ON/OFF signals from field devices and make those states available to the Modicon controller. Typical sources include proximity sensors, limit switches, push buttons, and auxiliary contacts.
The existing controller, available TM3 expansion configuration, required number of digital inputs, field-device signal characteristics, and existing wiring should all be checked. The input channel count alone should not be the only selection criterion.
Check the field device and its wiring first, then observe the corresponding PLC input status. If the expected electrical signal reaches the input but the controller does not register the correct state, the investigation can move toward the module, configuration, or controller side.
Yes. A TM3-based control system can combine discrete input, discrete output, and other compatible I/O modules according to the controller’s supported architecture. The final arrangement should be checked against the controller configuration and the requirements of the machine.
