The Schneider STBDDI3420 is a Modicon STB Standard Digital Input Module used to collect discrete ON/OFF signals from field devices and bring them into a Modicon STB distributed I/O island. It is suited to applications where the controller needs to monitor switches, sensors, contacts, and other two-state field signals.
In a typical machine or process installation, field devices are wired to the STBDDI3420, while the module communicates the resulting input states to the PLC or PAC through the STB island bus. The controller can then use these states for sequencing, interlocking, equipment status monitoring, alarms, and machine protection logic.
The module is useful when digital signals need to be collected locally rather than routed individually back to a central control cabinet. It can be combined with other Modicon STB digital and analog modules to build a distributed I/O station matched to the machine or process.
For replacement work, the existing STB configuration should be checked before installation. Channel assignment, field-device voltage, terminal arrangement, mounting base, controller I/O mapping, and the overall STB island configuration should all match the application.

The STBDDI3420 receives discrete electrical signals from field devices and makes their states available to the controller.
Field Device → STBDDI3420 → STB Island Bus → Network Interface → PLC / PAC
When a connected field device changes state, the corresponding input channel detects the electrical condition and reports the input state through the STB island communication path.
The PLC or PAC then uses the input information according to the application program. A signal from a proximity sensor, for example, may indicate that a machine component has reached a defined position. The controller can use this information to permit the next sequence step, stop an operation, trigger an alarm, or confirm an interlock condition.
Because the module handles the field-side digital interface while the controller handles the application logic, troubleshooting can be divided into clear stages. The technician can check the field device, wiring, input indication, STB communication, and PLC input state to identify where the signal path is interrupted.
The STBDDI3420 acts as the discrete signal acquisition point between field devices and the PLC or PAC.
Field Sensor / Switch → STBDDI3420 → STB Island Bus → NIM → Industrial Network → PLC / PAC

The STBDDI3420 is intended for compatible discrete field signals. Typical devices include proximity sensors, limit switches, pushbuttons, selector switches, auxiliary contacts, and other equipment that produces an ON/OFF signal.
The module acquires the field-side digital states and transfers the input data through the Modicon STB island bus to the network interface. The network interface then exchanges the data with the PLC or PAC over the selected control network.
First verify that the field device is actually generating the expected signal. Then check the associated wiring, terminal connection, channel assignment, and input configuration. If the correct electrical signal reaches the input but the controller still shows OFF, inspect the STB configuration and communication path.
Yes. The Modicon STB architecture allows digital and analog I/O modules to be combined within the same distributed I/O system when the overall island configuration and power requirements are appropriate. This allows discrete equipment status signals and continuous process measurements to be handled by the same distributed control station.
