Product Overview

The GE IC200ALG230D VersaMax 4-Channel Analog Input Module is a four-channel analog input module for VersaMax control and distributed I/O systems. It accepts either voltage or current signals from field instruments and converts those signals into digital values that can be processed by the VersaMax CPU or Network Interface Unit.

The module uses 12-bit analog conversion and supports four single-ended input channels with a shared return. Depending on the carrier terminal configuration, the channels can be used for voltage or current measurement. Typical field signals include process transmitters, pressure instruments, level sensors, flow measurement devices, and other analog instrumentation.

For voltage measurement, the module can be configured for bipolar or unipolar operation. Current operation supports the common 4–20 mA instrumentation range. Because the four inputs share a common return rather than being individually isolated, field wiring and signal reference arrangements should be considered during system design.

The IC200ALG230D receives its operating power through the VersaMax backplane. The connected field transducers require their own appropriate external power source where necessary, while the module handles the acquisition and conversion of the resulting analog signals for the control system.

Working Principle

The IC200ALG230D converts field-level analog measurements into digital input data for the VersaMax control system. A voltage or current signal from a connected instrument enters one of the four input channels, passes through the module’s analog input circuitry, and is converted into a digital value for the CPU or NIU.

Field Transmitter → IC200ALG230D → VersaMax Backplane → CPU / NIU → Control Logic

The input mode is established through the carrier terminal configuration. In current mode, the module accepts 4–20 mA signals. In voltage mode, it can process bipolar or unipolar voltage signals depending on the selected configuration.

The module supplies four words of analog input data to the control system. The CPU or NIU performs the higher-level processing, including scaling, alarming, comparison, sequencing, or closed-loop control.

Role in a VersaMax Analog Control Architecture

The module acts as the measurement interface between field instrumentation and the VersaMax controller.

Analog Instrument → IC200ALG230D → VersaMax Carrier → CPU / NIU → PLC Logic → HMI / SCADA / Output Control

Installation and Maintenance

  1. Confirm that the IC200ALG230D is installed on a compatible VersaMax carrier.
  2. Determine whether each application requires voltage or current input before wiring.
  3. Configure the carrier jumpers according to the selected input mode.
  4. For voltage signals, verify whether the application requires bipolar or unipolar operation.
  5. For current inputs, verify that the connected transmitter operates within the 4–20 mA range.
  6. Remember that the four channels are single-ended and share a common return.
  7. Provide the required external power for field transmitters and transducers.
  8. Keep analog signal wiring separated from high-voltage and high-current conductors.
  9. Use appropriate shielded instrumentation wiring where the installation environment requires it.
  10. Make sure the module and carrier connectors are fully seated before energizing the station.
  11. Check the OK LED for backplane power and the INT PWR LED for internal field-side power.
  12. If one channel reports an abnormal value, inspect that channel’s transmitter, wiring, return connection, jumper configuration, and scaling before replacing the module.
  13. If all four channels are affected, check the common return, carrier connection, backplane power, and module status.
  14. After replacement, verify input values against a known signal source before returning the control loop to automatic operation.

Because the channels share a common return, grounding and reference problems can affect more than one measurement. Troubleshooting should therefore distinguish between a single-channel instrument fault and a common wiring or carrier problem.

Technical FAQs

Can the IC200ALG230D measure both voltage and 4–20 mA signals?

Yes. The module supports voltage and current input modes. The carrier terminal jumper configuration determines the operating mode, so the wiring and configuration should be established before applying the field signal.

Are the four analog input channels individually isolated?

No. The inputs are single-ended and share a common return. Applications requiring channel-to-channel isolation should use an appropriate isolated analog input module instead.

What type of field instruments can be connected to this module?

Typical devices include 4–20 mA pressure, level, flow, and process transmitters, as well as voltage-output sensors and analog equipment interfaces. The actual instrument output must match the selected module input configuration.

Why would one channel show an incorrect value while the other channels operate normally?

A single incorrect channel usually points toward the associated transmitter, field wiring, terminal connection, input configuration, or scaling rather than a complete module power failure. Check the signal at the carrier terminals with a suitable meter or calibrator and compare it with the value reported by the PLC.
