The Schneider HMISTO715 Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen is a compact human-machine interface (HMI) terminal for machine operation, process visualization and operator interaction. It features a 4.3-inch color TFT display with a 480 × 272 pixel resolution and a resistive touchscreen. The terminal runs applications developed with EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert.
The HMISTO715 is particularly suited to compact machines where operators need to monitor process values, acknowledge alarms, enter settings or control operating sequences from a local panel. Typical examples include packaging equipment, small assembly machines and material-handling systems where a full-size industrial HMI would be unnecessary.
Its communication configuration distinguishes it from other HMISTO7 models. The HMISTO715 uses an RJ45 serial connection supporting RS-232C/RS-485 communication and does not have the Ethernet port provided on the HMISTO735. This makes the choice of model important when matching the HMI to an existing PLC or machine controller.
For a machine builder replacing an older operator terminal, the main considerations are the communication protocol, application software, screen layout and controller compatibility. The HMISTO715 can display graphical operating pages, process variables, alarm information and operator controls, provided the application is configured for the connected automation equipment.

The HMISTO715 operates as the operator-facing interface between a machine and its control system. Its HMI application organizes information into screens containing numerical values, status indicators, alarm messages, buttons and other graphical objects.
During operation, the terminal exchanges data with a compatible PLC or controller through its configured serial communication interface. The HMI reads the variables required for display and sends operator commands or entered values back to the controller where the application permits those actions.
Consider a packaging machine with a conveyor, product sensor and sealing mechanism. The HMISTO715 can display the current operating mode, production count and fault messages while providing controls for authorized operators. When an operator changes a permitted setting, the HMI communicates the new value to the controller, which executes the corresponding machine logic.
The HMI does not directly replace the PLC’s control program. Interlocks, motor control, safety functions and machine sequencing remain the responsibility of the associated control architecture. The HMI provides the visual interface through which operators observe and interact with those functions.
Communication depends on the serial settings, selected protocol, PLC configuration and application variables. Incorrect addressing, mismatched communication parameters or an unsuitable driver can prevent the terminal from displaying current data even when the touchscreen itself is functioning normally.
The HMISTO715 serves as the local visualization and operator-command terminal. It works with the machine controller and connected field devices rather than controlling the complete process independently.

| Schneider HMISTO705 | Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen | Related 4.3-inch model with an RS-232 serial configuration | Consider when the application requires the corresponding serial interface |
| Schneider HMISTO735 | Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen | Related 4.3-inch model with Ethernet communication | Consider when the controller connection requires Ethernet rather than the HMISTO715 serial interface |
| Schneider HMISTU655 | Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen | Related compact HMI with a 3.5-inch display | Compare display size, mounting arrangement and communication requirements |
| Schneider HMISTU855 | Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen | Related STU model with a 5.7-inch display | Consider when a larger display and the corresponding STU interfaces are required |
| Schneider HMISTO715 | Harmony STO & STU Touch Panel Screen | Requested model | Use the complete model reference when matching the serial communication configuration |
The main distinction is the communication interface. The HMISTO715 uses an RS-232C/RS-485 serial connection, while the HMISTO735 provides Ethernet connectivity. The appropriate model depends on the controller interface and the machine’s communication architecture.
The HMISTO715 uses EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert. The project must target the appropriate terminal and use compatible communication drivers, variable definitions and screen configurations.
The display can operate even when communication with the controller is unsuccessful. Check the selected serial interface, cable wiring, communication parameters, protocol configuration, PLC address mapping and application settings.
No. The HMI provides operator visualization and input, while safety interlocks and machine-control logic must be implemented in the appropriate control and safety equipment. HMI buttons should not be treated as a substitute for safety-rated functions.
