The Emerson SP4401 is an AC drive in the Unidrive SP series, used to regulate motor speed and torque in industrial machinery. It is suited to applications where motor output must respond to changing production demand, load conditions or machine-control commands. Typical installations include conveyors, extrusion equipment, winding systems, pumps and other process machinery driven by three-phase AC motors.
The SP4401 operates from a three-phase 380–480 V AC supply. Its rated output is 37 kW in Normal Duty operation and 30 kW in Heavy Duty operation, with corresponding output-current ratings of 68 A and 60 A. These duty classifications help determine whether the drive is suitable for a particular motor load, especially in applications involving frequent acceleration, changing torque demand or sustained operation.
The drive supports several motor-control strategies, including open-loop vector control, V/Hz control and compatible closed-loop operation. Built-in serial communication, configurable control interfaces, onboard PLC functionality and expansion options allow it to exchange operating commands with a machine controller and accommodate additional feedback or communication requirements.

The SP4401 converts incoming three-phase AC power into a controlled electrical output for the connected motor. It adjusts output voltage and frequency according to the selected control strategy, motor parameters and requested operating conditions.
In an industrial conveyor system, for example, a PLC can send a speed reference to the SP4401 according to production demand. The drive regulates the motor to maintain the required conveyor speed and follows the configured acceleration and deceleration ramps when operating conditions change. Available status and fault signals can be used by the controller to coordinate the conveyor with upstream and downstream machinery.
Open-loop control can be used where encoder feedback is unnecessary. Applications requiring feedback-based speed or torque regulation need a compatible feedback arrangement and the appropriate drive configuration. The onboard PLC can handle supported local drive logic, while serial communication and optional modules extend the drive’s integration with the machine-control system.
During commissioning, motor nameplate data, duty classification, current limits, speed references and ramp settings must be matched to the actual application. The selected control method should also reflect the motor type, load characteristics and required operating performance.
The SP4401 occupies the motor-control stage between the incoming electrical supply and the driven machine. It receives operating commands from a PLC or another configured control source and regulates motor output according to the application’s requirements.
