The Ingersoll Rand 47555207001 23545841 Air/Oil Separator is a replacement separator element for oil-flooded rotary screw air compressor systems. During compression, lubricant mixes with the air inside the compressor airend. The separator removes most of the entrained oil droplets before compressed air proceeds to the outlet circuit.
In industrial installations running multiple shifts, separator condition affects oil carryover, pressure drop and lubricant consumption. As the element accumulates contamination or its separation performance deteriorates, more oil may pass into the compressed-air line, potentially increasing downstream filter loading and lubricant losses.
The 23545841 part reference identifies the separator element specified for this product. During scheduled maintenance, technicians should verify the compressor model, separator housing arrangement and connection configuration before fitting a replacement. A separator that matches the general shape but differs in its sealing or internal construction may not perform as required.
This component serves the air/oil separation stage inside the compressor. It is distinct from the intake air filter, which removes airborne particles before compression, and the oil filter, which cleans the circulating compressor lubricant.

In an oil-flooded rotary screw compressor, lubricant enters the compression process to support sealing, cooling and lubrication. After compression, the air and oil mixture flows into the separation system.
The separator element captures fine oil droplets as the compressed-air mixture passes through its separation media. The collected oil gathers and is returned through the compressor’s oil recovery arrangement, while the separated air continues toward the outlet circuit.
As the separator ages or becomes contaminated, its pressure drop may increase. A damaged element, defective seal or incorrect installation can also allow excessive oil carryover. These conditions may appear as increased oil consumption, oil deposits in downstream equipment or abnormal separator differential pressure where monitoring is available.
Maintenance should therefore consider both separation performance and pressure drop. Replacing the element alone may not resolve persistent oil carryover if the oil return line, seals or other parts of the separation system are obstructed or damaged.
The air/oil separator sits downstream of the compression stage and separates lubricant from the compressed-air mixture before the air enters the outlet circuit.
Air and Oil Mixture → Separator Housing → Air/Oil Separator Element → Separated Compressed Air → Aftercooler / Outlet Circuit
| System Component | Function | Relationship to the Air/Oil Separator |
|---|---|---|
| 23545841 Air/Oil Separator | Separates entrained oil from compressed air | Performs the main separation function |
| Compressor Airend | Compresses incoming air and introduces lubricant in oil-flooded systems | Supplies the air/oil mixture |
| Separator Housing | Contains and directs the mixture through the separation stage | Supports the separator element and its seals |
| Oil Recovery Line | Returns collected oil where the system uses this arrangement | Carries separated lubricant back into the circuit |
| Minimum Pressure Valve | Maintains required internal pressure where fitted | Supports correct compressor operation |
| Oil Filter | Removes contaminants from circulating lubricant | Protects the lubrication circuit |
| Aftercooler | Reduces compressed-air temperature | Conditions air after the separation stage |
| Downstream Air Filter | Removes specified residual contaminants where fitted | Provides additional treatment after separation |
| Compressor Controller | Monitors and manages operating conditions | May display separator-related alarms when supported |
The precise arrangement depends on the compressor model and its oil separation design.

Common signs include increased oil carryover, rising separator differential pressure where monitored, increased lubricant consumption and oil deposits in downstream equipment. These symptoms can also have other causes, so the complete separation and oil recovery system should be assessed.
Differential pressure indicates the resistance to airflow across the separator element. A rising value may indicate loading or restriction, while an unusually low value accompanied by oil carryover may warrant checking for element damage, seal failure or bypass leakage.
Possible causes include incorrect element fitment, damaged or poorly seated seals, a blocked oil recovery line, or an underlying problem elsewhere in the separation system. Confirming correct installation is an important first check.
The recovery line returns collected oil to the intended circuit in systems that use this arrangement. If it becomes obstructed, separated oil may accumulate in the housing and increase the amount carried into the compressed-air outlet.
