The Schneider TM3DI16 is a Modicon TM3 Discrete Input Module used to expand the digital input capacity of compatible Modicon controllers. It provides 16 discrete input channels for receiving ON/OFF signals from field devices such as push buttons, selector switches, proximity sensors, limit switches, and auxiliary contacts.
In a typical control panel, the TM3DI16 sits between field devices and the controller’s I/O system. It collects the state of external discrete signals and transfers that information to the controller for logic processing. This makes it useful when the controller’s integrated inputs are not sufficient for the number of field signals required by the application.
The module is suited to machine control and distributed I/O applications where additional discrete sensing points are needed without replacing the main controller. Its role is primarily signal acquisition, while the connected controller handles sequence logic, interlocking, alarms, and control decisions.

The TM3DI16 receives discrete electrical signals from connected field devices and converts their input states into information that the controller can process.
A typical signal path is:
Field Device → TM3DI16 Discrete Input → Controller → Control Logic
When a connected switch or sensor changes state, the corresponding input channel detects the electrical condition. The module communicates the input status to the connected controller, which can then use the information for sequence control, permissive logic, alarms, interlocking, or machine status monitoring.
For example, a limit switch can provide a position confirmation to one input channel, while push buttons and auxiliary contacts can occupy other channels. The controller interprets each channel independently according to the application program.
The TM3DI16 functions as an input expansion point between field-level devices and the controller.
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Push Buttons / Switches | Generate operator or machine ON/OFF commands |
| Proximity / Limit Sensors | Provide machine position or status signals |
| TM3DI16 | Collects 16 discrete field input signals |
| Modicon Controller | Processes input states through the control program |
| TM3 Expansion Architecture | Provides additional modular I/O capacity |
| Output Modules | Execute commands generated by the controller |
| HMI | Displays machine status and operator information |
| Actuators | Perform physical machine actions based on controller commands |
The module therefore handles the field input side of the control architecture while the controller determines how each signal affects machine operation.
The TM3DI16 is used to expand the discrete input capacity of compatible Modicon controllers. It receives ON/OFF signals from field devices and makes their states available to the controller.
Typical applications include push buttons, selector switches, limit switches, proximity sensors, and auxiliary contacts. The electrical characteristics of the field device should be checked against the module’s input requirements before connection.
The TM3DI16 is an input module, so it receives status or command signals from field devices. A digital output module performs the opposite function by sending control signals from the controller to external devices such as relays, contactors, solenoids, or indicator devices.
First check the field device and its wiring, followed by the relevant reference/common connection and input channel. If the field signal is present but the controller still shows an incorrect state, the module connection and controller I/O configuration should also be checked.
