The GE IC693MDL930E Series 90-30 Isolated Relay Output Module is used to switch external loads from a Series 90-30 PLC control system. Relay outputs provide electrical switching between the PLC output circuitry and connected field devices, making this module suitable for applications where individual output channels need isolated switching paths.
In a typical Series 90-30 installation, the PLC logic determines when an output should change state. The IC693MDL930E receives the corresponding output command and operates its relay contacts to switch the connected field circuit. Typical loads can include contactors, solenoids, indicator devices, interposing relays, and other discrete control equipment.
The isolated relay arrangement is useful when output circuits have different field-side requirements or when channel-to-channel electrical separation is needed. The module belongs to the output layer of the PLC architecture rather than the CPU or communication layer.

The IC693MDL930E converts an output command from the Series 90-30 control logic into a physical relay contact state. When the PLC program determines that a particular output should be energized, the corresponding relay operates and changes the state of its field-side contacts.
The connected load is therefore switched through the relay contact rather than being driven directly by the PLC logic circuitry. When the output command is removed, the relay returns to its inactive state according to the module’s relay operation.
The isolated channel arrangement allows output circuits to be treated independently when wiring and troubleshooting the field side. A useful troubleshooting method is to separate the problem into three areas: PLC output command, relay operation, and external load circuit. If the PLC logic is correct but the field device does not respond, the wiring, load, and relay contact path should be checked before assuming a CPU or program fault.
| System Element | Function |
|---|---|
| Field Devices | Receive switched output signals from the PLC system |
| Sensors / Inputs | Provide operating conditions and status information to the PLC |
| Series 90-30 CPU | Executes application logic and determines output states |

The IC693MDL930E is positioned between the PLC logic and external discrete loads:
PLC Program → Series 90-30 CPU → Backplane → IC693MDL930E → Relay Contacts → Field Load
Input modules and sensors provide the conditions used by the PLC program, while the relay output module executes the resulting discrete output commands at the field interface.

The module is intended for discrete relay-output applications. Typical loads include contactors, solenoids, interposing relays, indicator devices, and other equipment that can be controlled through relay contacts. The actual load must remain within the applicable electrical limits of the module and connected circuit.
Relay outputs provide physical contact switching between the PLC output function and the external load circuit. Isolated channels can be useful when different field circuits need to remain electrically separated or when the connected equipment is better suited to relay-contact switching.
First verify that the PLC program is commanding the intended output. Then check the module’s output state and relay contact path, followed by the field wiring, external power supply, and load. This approach helps distinguish a PLC logic issue from a relay-output or field-device problem.
Confirm the PLC output command, module seating, backplane connection, field wiring, external load, and relay contact behavior. If only one field device is affected, inspect that output channel and its associated wiring before replacing the entire module.
