The ABB REM 545 Machine Protection Terminal is a rotating machine protection and control device used for generators, generator-transformer units, synchronous motors, and large asynchronous motors. It combines protection, measurement, control, condition monitoring, and communication functions in a single terminal, making it suitable for applications where several machine protection functions need to be coordinated within one device.
In generator applications, the REM 545 monitors electrical conditions such as current, voltage, frequency, power, and other operating parameters. Protection functions can be configured for faults and abnormal operating conditions including overcurrent, earth fault, overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal overload, unbalanced load, abnormal frequency, underexcitation, and power-related operating conditions.
For medium-voltage motors, the terminal can be applied to important equipment such as pumps, fans, mills, and crushers. Motor start-up supervision and protection functions help distinguish normal acceleration from conditions such as stalled starting or excessive thermal loading.
The REM 545 also incorporates programmable logic and communication capabilities, allowing protection decisions, interlocking, control sequences, alarms, and monitoring information to be coordinated within the machine protection architecture. It was also used as part of ABB substation automation solutions and supported communication with higher-level control and monitoring systems.

The REM 545 receives electrical measurement signals from the protected machine through compatible current and voltage measurement circuits. These signals are processed by the terminal and compared with configured protection thresholds and operating conditions.
When the measured electrical or operating condition reaches a configured protection level, the corresponding protection function generates an alarm or trip command. Programmable logic can combine protection information with breaker status, interlocking conditions, and control commands before the final output is issued.
Generator / Motor → CT / VT / Sensors → REM 545 → Protection & Logic Processing → Trip / Alarm / Control → Switchgear
For motor applications, the terminal can also supervise the starting process. Starting-related measurements and protection logic help identify abnormal acceleration, excessive thermal loading, or stall conditions before they develop into more serious equipment faults.
The REM 545 acts as the central protection and monitoring terminal between the rotating machine, measurement transformers or sensors, switchgear, and higher-level automation system.

The REM 545 is intended for rotating-machine protection. Typical applications include small and medium-power generators, generator-transformer units, medium-voltage synchronous motors, and large asynchronous motors.
Yes. Motor applications can use start-up supervision and related protection functions to monitor the motor during acceleration. This is particularly useful for large motors driving pumps, fans, mills, crushers, and other high-inertia loads.
The replacement should be checked against the original hardware configuration, measurement connections, protection settings, binary I/O assignments, communication parameters, programmable logic, and machine-specific protection requirements. A functionally similar terminal should not be installed without verifying the complete application configuration.
Possible causes include incorrect protection settings, abnormal CT or VT signals, genuine machine faults, incorrect phase or polarity connections, communication or logic conditions, and external trip/interlocking signals. The event records, measured values, protection status, and external circuit conditions should be checked before changing protection settings.
