The Schneider VW3A3327 is an Altivar PROFINET Communication Card used to integrate compatible Altivar variable speed drives into a PROFINET industrial Ethernet network. It gives the drive a direct communication interface for exchanging control commands, speed references, operating status, and available diagnostic information with a PROFINET controller.
In a machine with several variable speed drives, the VW3A3327 can be used to bring individual drives into a common automation network. The PLC handles the overall sequence and coordination, while each Altivar drive continues to perform the actual motor-control task.
This configuration is useful when the control system needs more than basic start/stop wiring. For example, a PLC can issue a speed reference to a conveyor drive, monitor its operating state, and respond to a drive fault through the same PROFINET network. The result is a cleaner connection between the motion-control layer and the plant automation system.

The VW3A3327 provides the communication path between the Altivar drive’s internal control functions and the PROFINET network.
A PROFINET controller, typically a PLC, exchanges configured process data with the drive. Depending on the drive configuration, this can include control commands, speed references, operating status, actual values, and diagnostic information. The communication card transfers the network data to and from the drive’s internal control system.
The motor itself remains under the control of the Altivar drive. The VW3A3327 does not replace the drive’s inverter or motor-control electronics; it allows those functions to be coordinated from the higher-level automation system.
In a conveyor application, for example, the PLC can send a running command and speed reference through PROFINET. The drive executes the motor-control task and returns operating information to the PLC, allowing the controller to coordinate the conveyor with sensors, upstream equipment, and downstream machines.

It adds a PROFINET communication interface, allowing the drive to exchange supported control, reference, status, and diagnostic data with a PROFINET controller.
With PROFINET control, commands and references can originate from the automation controller and travel through the network to the drive. The Altivar drive still performs the actual inverter and motor-control functions according to its configuration.
A healthy network connection does not necessarily mean the drive is configured for network control. The command source, reference source, drive parameters, PROFINET device configuration, and PLC program should all be checked.
It can be used as part of a multi-drive PROFINET architecture when the individual Altivar drives are compatible with the card. Each drive must be correctly identified and configured within the PROFINET controller, with its corresponding process data and control settings.
